Meet the mighty Elwah River out on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s not just another pretty place but also the sight of the world’s largest dam removal project.

*Update March 2023: Work officially began on the Klamath River Restoration, now the world’s largest dam removal project.

A thin line of horizontal low clouds bisects this rich landscape. Above this line is a steep mountain covered in a verdantly green coniferous forest; a brilliant blue sky with white clouds fills the background. Below the thin line a river enters the photo mid frame flowing southeast off the landscape, its surface frothy in places with small rapids. Unexpectedly the river appears silver and a light shade of green. Its shores are lined with leafless birch, boulders and one large leafless big leaf maple tree on the left. There are a few rocky bars exposed in the river. The combination of leafless trees and autumn colored vegetation on the shores with evergreen trees on the mountain is intensely beautiful, evoking a desire to protect this living river, its inhabitants, its landscape.
