The image depicts a black and white photograph taken during the late 1800s to early 1900s, showing two individuals engaged in what appears to be an activity involving small cards or objects spread out on a table. The setting seems informal, perhaps within a Chinese community given the traditional attire of one individual and the presence of Chinese characters written in large block letters on fabric hung behind them. These words translate to "fortune teller" which suggests that this scene might involve a fortune-telling session.
The photographer is Arnold Genthe (1869-1942), known for his work capturing various aspects of San Francisco and its residents, including the Chinatown district where he often documented life in Chinese communities. This particular photograph originates from The fortune teller series, which was created between 1896 and 1906.
The image is a nitrate-based negative on paper with dimensions ranging approximately four by five inches or smaller. It carries the reference number "2345" at its lower right corner, indicating that it might be part of an archive or collection documenting Genthe's works during his active period as a photographer in Chinatown.
The overall atmosphere is somewhat mysterious and reflective of the era's cultural practices involving divination and seeking guidance through fortune-telling.

"Fortune-telling was so fashionable in the first half of the 20th century that some machines, such as The Gypsy Fortune Teller, advertised the subject and did not actually offer a fortune. Each penny played on The Gypsy Fortune Teller dispensed a ball of gum, with prizes for winning suits available behind the counter. Other fortune-tellers kept pace with new technologies. The countertop Futura fortune machine illuminates its predictions from a roll of 35 mm film inside, visible through a lighted window atop a plastic “crystal ball.” All objects are courtesy of Joe Welch American Antique Museum in San Bruno, California. "The Automatic Age: Coin-Operated Machines" is on display, pre-security, in the International Terminal. http://bit.ly/CoinOperated" This was posted to our Instagram account on August 30, 2018 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729357723/

A lot of religious practices seem kind of silly, but taking the auspices makes sense. are hyper aware, and they are in such a great position to observe us, they clearly know what's going on.

One of my dolls lives in a museum. You can meet and greet her in The Museum of Magic, Fortune-telling & Witchcraft in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's Frau Perchta from Germanic mythology. She is waiting for you in Folk Witch display.

If you run a museum or any other public space that you think could benefit from such doll, let me know. I'm open for discussions and creating the doll that you need. I just love museums and the idea of my witch dolls greeting people in public spaces. If my doll lands in your museum I will brag about it forever.
