This is the icy opposite of the previous layer detail image, which had a fiery, warm feeling to it. This one is blue and very cold-looking!

As usual, it resembles a satellite image of a melting polar region, or some other very cold environment!

Thank you for visiting the places I create, where sometimes you need to bring a jacket!

In continuing with the theme of satellite imagery, this detail from the burnt umber layer seems to be getting with the program! It looks like a lava flow, from the caldera of a volcano, as it engulfs a riverbed! The tendrils of lava flowing out in all directions also resemble alluvial fans from rivers, as that's basically what these are, only on a much smaller scale.

Thank you very much for your interest in my artwork, and for coming along on this hot air balloon ride with me!

Layer 6 (Ultramarine Blue) Detail 1
#art #abstract #abstractart #Nature #MastoArt #ArtistsOnMastodon #NaturalProcessPainting #FractalFieldPainting

This is an extreme closeup detail of a textural area, in this new painting. It resembles a poison toad's skin! It's deeply rough, with ridges and bumps everywhere - lots of little nooks and crannies to hold pigments!

The newest color layer is ultramarine blue, which has brought many more blue and purple hues to light!

This painting still has a long way to go, and the days are getting shorter, but I will hopefully finish this before the year ends! Sometimes it frustrates me how long it takes to paint these, but nature cannot be rushed!

Thank you for coming along on these art journeys with me, which sometimes take a very long time!

Layer 5 (Marigold Orange) Detail 2

Here is a better, larger view of the "sweeping, dynamic motion" I was trying to get. Again, it looks like all of the subtleness in the color layers is lost, but it's just because the orange layer is so dominant. All of those other colors are still there, they're just being overshadowed ...or perhaps outshined by the orange because it's so vivid and opaque, but it's pigment grains cannot cover everything. Those other pigment grains remain, and their effect will be seen again once some other colors are added!

Thank you so much for your interest in my work, and for checking on this painting's progress with me!

Well a good deal of the previous layer's chromatic depth is lost in this view, but not covered over in the grand scheme. I was wanting some big, sweeping areas of color to bring the details together in a more dynamic composition, and I think I'm starting to get there with this. It still has a good way to go, but thank you so much for traveling on this road with me! It's much less lonely with company!

Layer 4 (Red Mica) Detail 2
#art #abstract #abstractart #Nature #MastoArt #ArtistsOnMastodon #NaturalProcessPainting #FractalFieldPainting

This is the highly detailed "micro-level" view of the texture detail I was referring to earlier. In this view, purple, blue, and orange can be detected, but none of those colors have actually been applied, not yet! What's there are interactions between the various pigment layers that have already been added: raw umber, yellow ochre, chrome oxide green, and red mica.

Now my mission is to establish some larger areas of color, to give the piece more dynamic compositional elements!

Wish me luck, and thank you for your interest in my work!

There's definitely some crazy texture patterns happening, but the micro and macro need to come together a bit more yet! I have plans to accomplish that, but in the meantime I'm getting some nice details when I zoom in! This is the fourth color layer, this time it's metallic red mica. It almost seems to boil - it's almost effervescent!

Wish me luck, and thank you for coming along with me on this art journey!

Layer 3 (Yellow Ochre)
#art #abstract #abstractart #Nature #MastoArt #ArtistsOnMastodon #NaturalProcessPainting #FractalFieldPainting

This is the third pigment layer, and with it some more of the composition has begun to emerge...

The yellow areas at the bottom of the image have set that region apart from the rest, and though the details are making this a little too "busy" still, as with the previous paintings with cracked gesso, but not nearly as pronounced. I have confidence that I'll be able to continue to create dynamic compositional elements!

If you have confidence in me, then THANK YOU! <3

I'm intentionally trying to stay within what I would consider to be "natural earth-tones", although the Earth can produce any shade of any color. That attitude toward a more "conventional" palatte is bound to change, but for the foundation of this I wanted a natural feeling.

...Although considering the term "natural process painting" that's hardly surprising! All I can say to that is that rainbows are 100% natural. But let them arc above a believable landscape, so that their glow can stand out against the drab minerals.

Layer 1 (Raw Umber) Detail 1
#art #abstract #abstractart #Nature #MastoArt #ArtistsOnMastodon #NaturalProcessPainting #FractalFieldPainting

This is just the raw umber layer on raw gesso, so we're talking a lot of brown and white. The depth of the gesso formations lends itself well to the process of pigment deposition, so the result is a gradient which amplifies the depth. So far I like how there's an abundance of detail up close, but the further away you are, the more other, larger shapes emerge! I hope this trend continues!

Thank you so much for coming along on this art journey with me!

Layer 1 (Raw Umber)
#art #abstract #abstractart #Nature #MastoArt #ArtistsOnMastodon #NaturalProcessPainting #FractalFieldPainting

Already we have some nice contrast and detail emerging, in spite of the relatively low-relief produced by this gesso, and in spite of the fact that this is the very first color layer! I'm so relieved to finally have smooth, un-cracked gesso to paint on, I cannot even express to you the extent to which this is true. I've already applied the first 2 color layers, and the weather looks great for adding a third one later on today!

The color is a warm brown earth-tone (raw umber), and it really shows off the delicate, intricate details which this piece showcases. I'm actually a little surprised that I was able to pull so much from what looked like so little, and I'm excited to work further on it!

Thank you for your interest, and for keeping me company on this art journey!

Layer 0 (raw gesso) detail 1

I have a new painting! Those of you who have been following me for a while may already be aware, but if you just joined us I have been trying to replicate 90's gesso, before the industry standard changed to a cheaper formula. The main problem I've been running into is cracking, but I've selected a much better base paint to use, and as a result the dried product is supple, soft, and pliable! NO CRACKS! Hooray!! This is the 10th attempt, and in spite of the problems I have with this particular piece so far, it is a milestone in terms of materials.

The main problem I have with this image is that the paint was MUCH too thin, and even 2.5 lbs. of marble dust wasn't enough to thicken it to the point that I could really get some high relief from it. The end result is that this detail is fairly indicative of the entire surface of the painting - LOTS of fine detail, but not much in the way of large areas of contrasting texture for the purpose of developing a dynamic composition.

...Not yet, anyway. *winks* When I add color that will inevitably change, but what's really important is that I can easily add more marble dust next time, use a thicker paint of the same type, or both if necessary. I have solved the brittle gesso problem!

Thank you so much for putting up with my mad scientist ass while I (re)figure all of this out, I promise I will make this journey worthwhile for you, or die trying!
