Am I the only one that notices the impossibility of this image? That turkey (and the platter holding it) is likely close to 30 pounds (or ~15kg), and that elderly woman is holding it out at arm's length as if it's a small plate of peas.

I don't think that platter gets to the center of the table without someone holding it from each end. #NormanRockwell #FreedomFromWant #Thanksgiving

The painting "Freedom From Want" by Norman Rockwell, shows a 70-something woman placing a monstrous turkey at the center of a dinner table with little effort on her part.

A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

It is not only in war, however, that we fight for freedom. One fights for freedom in personal contacts and in many phases of civilian life. When the war is over, the four freedoms will not have been won, we shall simply have dominated their more aggressive enemies. At all times, day by day, we have to continue fighting for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom from fear, and freedom from want — for these are things that must be gained in peace as well as in war. At all times, day by day, we have to continue fighting for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom from want — for these are things that must be gained in peace as well as in war.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) First Lady of the US (1933-45), politician, diplomat, activist
Column (1943-04-15), “My Day”

I have arrived in a state of being where I have all the material things I need to be happy except for a clothesline, a small shed, a pair of wide-wale rust-colored corduroy trousers that fit me perfectly, and progressive glasses with the division in the right place.

A quotation from Franklin Roosevelt

In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
The first is freedom of speech and expression — everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way — everywhere in the world.
The third is freedom from want — which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants — everywhere in the world.
The fourth is freedom from fear — which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor — anywhere in the world.
That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) American lawyer, politician, statesman, US President (1933-1945)
Speech (1941-01-06) to Congress, Annual Message (State of the Union), “Four Freedoms,” Washington, D. C.

Thomas Manton was an English Puritan. Here he equates an interest in works of mercy with becoming like God. He says this is necessary for those who expect or have received mercy from God. God is mercy. If you don’t want to be like God, this is evidence of your dislike of God.

Do we meet people who want to choose a major, and opt out of one?

How can you remind those who talk of receiving mercy to exercise works of mercy today?

"Works of mercy do well become them that do expect or have received mercy from God; this is to be like God, and we should never come to him, or go away from him, but with somewhat of his image in our hearts: dissimilitude and disproportion is the ground of dislike."

John Willison, Scottish evangelical, writes on usury in a catechism. Don’t take money from those who borrow from necessity, nor take 10, 15, or 20 %.

What would a modern evangelical say to this? Today we would scoff at citing a specific number that is just wage or oppressive interest. Willison gives a number. Do we split hairs and swallow a camel of injustice?

Any dire suffering around you because of interest on debt?
