Still on stock Android on the Pixel for now. Does anyone have any insight on #GoogleAdvancedProtection program. I have it enabled just as an extra layer of security but I feel like that are so many good apps that are not in the Play Store. Maybe it's just FOMO or boredom. I think even with GAPP turned off I should still get a message about installing apps from unknown sources and Google Play protections still scan apps. Anyone with more insight is welcome to chime in #android #security #apk #googleplayprotect

This is a bit of a belated TIL, but #Google Advanced Protection ( google.com/advancedprotection/ ) prevents installation of APKs from outside of the Play Store (but won't automatically delete/disable previously installed foreign APKs if they're already on your device)
Further, it also prevents approving sensitive permissions (e.g. Notifications access) for foreign APKs that are already on your #Android device
If you're actually trying to install something like GadgetBridge from #FDroid on your phone and grant it Notifications access, then you need to disable #GoogleAdvancedProtection on your account, wait a few hours/days (?) for your phone to notice, and then do your install+grant
Then you can re-enable Advanced Protection
I haven't tried it, but I believe GAP blocks even the recent attack vector via Web APKs to install malicious apps on your phone, so it's worth enabling

For these reading about Google Advanced Protection be aware that by turning it on your App Password are removed and if you got anything set with them, they will stop working.

I enabled #GoogleAdvancedProtection ( landing.google.com/advancedpro ) on my main #Google account (I'm positive I had this turned on years ago, maybe I disabled it at some point?)

Anyhow, it seems to have completely broken the link between Google's Nest home security system and my Google Home / Nest / Hub devices

I assume this is because of some poor migration/integration between Google and Nest since that acquisition

I don't depend on any of these products, but it's sort of funny that securing my Google account has made it harder to use Google devices to secure my physical home

Hi @googlecloud@twitter.com @google@twitter.com, are Feitian/Titan keys marked "G3" safe from the vulnerabilities announced earlier in the year? Thanks!
