I think it was from Peter DeShazo that I learned how the development of urban sewage and potable water systems was a more or less direct result of typhoid fever spreading from poor suburbs to wealthy and middle class neighborhoods. Once elite reformers realized their own family members were dying from a preventable disease they invested in the infrastructure that protected the entire community.
