Doorsday. Entrance to the anatomical theatre in Uppsala. Sparks the imagination; in which role are you entering? As the student, perhaps about to watch an examination for the first time? As master performing the examination? Or maybe as the cadaver to be placed on the table?

Entrance to an anatomical theatre. Beyond the door is an enclosed table in the middle, the table itself not visible, only the fence. Steep stairs to each side, only the wooden rails visible, not the steps. Five rows of stands for the audience.

Inside the anatomical theatre at Museum Gustavianum in Uppsala, Sweden. This is a reconstruction that was built approximately 100 years ago; the original was built in the 1600s and probably quite similar to this, since drawings and descriptions were still available.

Anatomical theatre. Five rows of audience stands, rising steep, painted in red end blue colours. At the bottom and in the middle of the octagonal room an oval table where, back in day, the cadaver was placed for educational examination.

An octagonal cupola seen from the inside. The ceiling, walls and pillars are wood painted in light grey. There are two rows of windows to let as much daylight as possible in; this cupola was built to be the light inlet for an anatomical theatre.
