リチャードソンは昨年の選挙前、ヘリテージ財団による「プロジェクト2025」の危険性について、最も積極的に警鐘を鳴らしていた政治研究者の１人だと思う。
本書は前書きと後書きの両方でかなりトランプ現象について分量を割いて現状の危機について述べ、本文で米国の民主主義について、ヘリテージ財団周辺が主張するように、あくまでも裕福な白人男性だけのものなのか、それともリンカーンがゲティスバーグ演説で主張したように「人は平等に作られたという信条に基づいて」建国されたのか、この2つの潮流のせめぎ合いを詳しく説明する内容になっている。
白人至上主義とファシズムの根っこが、米国史の底流に常にあったのがよくわかる。
米国史とトランプ現象に興味ある方には強くお勧め。今の日本の主流のアメリカ研究の流れからすると、邦訳はすぐには出ないかな…
次はヤニス・バルファキスの「テクノ封建主義」を聴く予定。
