Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 10:
Oculus 2013

I'm ashamed to say, I bailed on this one in the first 30 minutes on first viewing. There is something a little bit grating about how the film sets itself up, but once you get comfortable with how its communicating this is just a smart frickin movie. If you're not getting that I like films that screw with your head, this will get the point across. It's original, and once it gets past trying to tell you that and actually shows you, it's so good.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 9:
Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Su-mi comes home from a mental hospital and reunites with her younger sister Su-yeon, but bizarre things keep happening at home. I love this one for the stepmother, who has a barely controlled mania that's more frightening than any of the ghosts. I'm not sure how I feel on the movie's portrayal of mental illness, here used as a plot device to add a twist to a Korean folk tale. Lots of blood, mental illness not treated the most sensitively.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 8:
The Haunted (1991)

Fans of The Conjuring movies are well acquainted with The Warrens, and those that have gone to see Conjuring Last Rites are already familiar with the story of the Smurl family haunting. This made for TV movie follows that case, one of a close knit Catholic family being tormented by a demon. I'm quite partial to this one because the cast turns in a very believable performance, and there are truly creepy moments. Content warning for sexual assault on this one.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 7
The Cell (2000)

This is a movie I enjoy more for the visuals than the plot. Honestly I wouldn't be saddened if everything outside of the dream sequences was removed and the film turned into a long music video. A scientist enters the dreaming mind of a serial killer to discover where his last victim is being held hostage. Look the plot is meh, nobody really cares. It's a body horror, gore, and disturbing effects music video. Vincent D'Onofrio does an amazing job being creepy as all Hell.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 6:
As Above, So Below

This claustrophobic journey through the catacombs under Paris starts slow, but never lets up on dread. I personally have a low tolerance for stressed people bickering with each other, but I love a film with a good mind screwing. Once you hit the midway point, the film really picks up on the scares, and the ending is fantastic. Some gore, possibly body horror, I forget.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 5:
The Howling II (1985)

Look, this isn't a good movie but damn is it fun! Reb Brown movies are always enjoyable (Space Mutiny fans know what I mean). There's a good balance of comedy and cheese, and there have been far worse makeup effects in the werewolf genre. Low gore, bare boobs though.

I'm having fun, I get to watch 31 trailers. Well 22 by this point. I'm not good at like, selling a movie. I'm the "Oh dude, have you seen...?" person in the group. But I'm trying. Ok back to scheduling posts.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 4
Jacob's Ladder (1990)

A Vietnam vet experiences periods of disassociation and starts to see demonic entities. As he digs deeper into his service, he begins to suspect that the military has been tampering with his mind. Tim Robbins does a phenomenal job of portraying a man wracked by grief and struggling to maintain his grip on reality. Truly disturbing special effects used in just the right amounts to keep the tension and dread going. Definitely some gore and violence because, ya know, Vietnam war.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 3:
Rubber (2010)

This fourth wall breaking horror comedy usually gets slotted into people's "bad movie" lists, but I just can't see it that way. A sentient tire goes on a killing spree, an audience *inside* the film watches the film unfold and provides confused commentary. It's fresh, original, and funny as hell. It's a mockery of a horror genre that sold us on killer cars and other cursed inanimate objects. Look it's just FUN, give it a chance. Get some friends and food for this one. People's heads blow up, a lot, can't recall if there's gore so just assume there is.

Heathen Spoopy Movies Day 2:
In The Mouth of Madness (1994)

I'm going to preface this by saying this John Carpenter movie is definitely middle of the pack. Don't go into it expecting The Thing levels of quality. If you're a fan of cosmic horror, creepy small towns, and evil that screws with the protagonist's mind, this is an enjoyable 95 minutes. Definitely a higher gore/goo factor.

I put the cart before the horse lol.

If you don't want to see my horror recommendations for October, once a day, mute #HeathenHorror or just mute me for a while. (You will never hurt my feelings if you have to mute, unfollow, or block me. Do what you have to do to protect yourself.)

Quality movies not guaranteed, I like some absolute trash and will recommend things to laugh at.

Heathen's Spoopy Movie Rec Day 1:
The Innocents (1961)

This adaptation of Henry James' "Turn of the Screw" has probably the creepiest children out of all of them. If you like your horror more on the psychological side with no gore, this may be your thing.
