Today in Labor History October 12, 1998: Matthew Shepard died from injuries sustained after being beaten and tortured in a homophobic assault in Laramie, Wyoming. The crime led to numerous attempts to enact new anti-hate crime laws at the local and federal level. All were opposed by conservative groups and most failed. It wasn’t until 2009 that the Matthew Shepard Act was finally signed into law. NBA player Jason Collins wore jersey number “98” in honor of Matthew Shepard during the 2021-2013 season, before coming out himself. “The Laramie Project” was a play about Matthew Shepard’s life and death, written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project. Two men were convicted for the murder, both receiving 2 consecutive life sentences.

But it's not just "societies worldwide" that deny rights to women and treat women as second-class human beings. The Catholic church does that, and the rigid, biology-based gender norms it applies also yield not just misogyny but homophobia. The norms serve heterosexism and exalt heterosexual males as the pinnacle of creation.

Today in Labor History October 3, 1957: The California State Superior Court ruled that the book Howl and Other Poems, by Allen Ginsberg, was not obscene. The poem was based, in part, on a horrifying peyote hallucination he had of the glitzy Sir Frances Drake hotel, in San Francisco, morphing into a child-eating demon. The poem’s references to drug use and to homosexuality are what provoked the obscenity trial. City Lights bookstore own and publisher of Howl, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and bookstore manager, Shig Murao, were arrested on obscenity charges for selling the book.
