Today in Labor History December 22, 2010: President Obama signed the repeal of the Don't ask, don't tell policy. The 17-year-old law banned LGBTQ people from serving openly in the U.S. military. As a result, LGBTQ people could serve openly and kill innocent civilians throughout the world for the benefit of American corporations, just like their cis and straight sisters and brothers. The fascists currently running the U.S. government have since taken things the opposite direction, implementing Executive Order 14183, which bans all transgender people from serving in the military. The Supreme Court has upheld the ban. Not only have they fired trans servicemen and women, but they have denied them retirement and other benefits they had earned.

With the whole 'Miss Finland is a racist' thing going on and our right wing idiot party pouring gazoline into the flames, more and more idiots are piling up with their 'well I had an immigrant friend and they never got angry when I did the whole I'm Asian' thing for them.

These same people have the ever green 'I have a gay friend and I've told them horrible gay jokes and they didn't get offended'. Guess what: a straight person has never told me an offensive gay joke that I considered funny. Some of them were just like meh, some hit me deep inside, but I always faked laughter and was like 'that's a good one!' because my life was already a fight, I really needed to pick the ones I really wanted to fight about. So someone bragging with that shit is just fucking sad, especially when the same people start screaming when they see two guys kiss, when just moment ago the queer folk were the snowflakes.
If you can't say something nice, then I will say something worse, and teach you that saying nothing is always better. #homophobia
Today in Labor History December 20, 1957: British working-class singer/songwriter Billy Bragg was born. Bragg was a strong supporter of the 1984 miners’ strike and has been an outspoken critic of fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. And he’s a really nice guy.

Today in Labor History December 15, 1973: The American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from its official list of psychiatric disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In the 1950s and 1960s, some therapists used aversion therapy to "cure" homosexuality. Like in Anthony Burgess’s, “A Clockwork Orange,” they would show patients pictures of naked men while giving them electric shocks or drugs to make them puke. In the 1973 vote, 5,854 members voted to remove homosexuality from the DSM, while 3,810 voted to retain it. In a compromise, they agreed to remove homosexuality from the DSM, but replaced it with "sexual orientation disturbance" for people "in conflict with" their sexual orientation. They did not completely remove homosexuality from the DSM until 1987. And despite the overtly torturous nature of the therapy, as of today, only 8 U.S. states have banned it. And only a handful of nations have banned it (including Canada, Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, France, Germany, and Greece.)
