Hope shattered: 'I would be dead if it weren't for my son'
By #BonnieChristian
Hope Grainger said she felt suicidal when she received a phone call last week to say she would be moved out of the Mt Claremont home of 35 years.
The Department of Homes and Works told Ms Grainger, 54, that she and her four year old son Philip would be relocated from their Erica St home to a one bedroom unit in Armadale.
Their 10 year old short-coated saluki would not
be allowed to come with them.
"I was hysterical. I have barely eaten since. I wanted to die." she said.
Ms Grainger was born with serious congenital defects and was not expected to survive childhood, which she spent at Rocky Bay in Mosman Park.
"The department has been thinking I'll die any day but I'm still here." she said.
She fought hard to be placed in her current home, only winning with community and political agitation.
The house has been altered over the years making it fit for Ms Grainger to use.
She was told this week after a recent routine maintenance check that the building would be easier to bulldoze than repair and she would have to be relocated.
That contradicted a recent engineer's opinion.
"All along they've told me, "We won't move you: You can stay here." she said.
"Even the engineer said to me, " I don't know anything that needs fixing here that can't be done with you in it."
