#HowToBuildAGirl

2026-01-20

I read that it was set on a council estate in #Wolverhampton in the 1990s, and I was expecting #HowToBuildAGirl (2019) to be a lot darker than it turned out to be.

I initially thought that the Wolverhampton accent wasn't much cop; until I read that the actor was a 20-something American, and flip-flopped to being impressed at how good it was compared to some Americans's attempts at U.K. accents.

The people who did the credits tried hard, but typewriters didn't have distinct em-dashes and hyphens at different heights, nor mid-dots. Retroactive #Unicode showed through a bit. (-:

But the craziest part of the credits is that this is the first time that I've ever seen #Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council acknowledged in a movie's credits.

Amusing too to see that the credits could only use real names for the dead people on the wall, and 'Snow Pixie' is not dead.
