@rivetgeek I would call #fiasco and #InSpectres no-prep.

@AminiAllight I mean exactly what I said when I opened: Everything is a mystery when you don't know the answer.

Do you want to keep things mysterious on the tabletop when NPCs are around? Then don't know the answer to the questions they pose. Yes, as the GM, if you want to be surprised, you have to actually be surprised, and for that to happen, you have to not have knowledge.

In games like #Ironsworn, the fortune at the front mechanic preloads the outstanding question of the interaction. That is, will this interaction have a positive, negative, or mixed outcome?

You decide to engage with the fiction, then activate the randomizer to determine the quality of the result, and only after you do that do you actually answer the question. The answer is interpretive rather than proscriptive.

Or consider a game like #InSpectres (drivethrurpg.com/en/product/17), which allows the player whose character has rolled a positive result on a skill test to simply narrate what it is that they find in the course of a mystery.

Or #OnMightyThews (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php), which uses a very similar resolution concept.

@BrianBloodaxe Fiasco is only as one-shot focused as you are interested in not doing it again. The only key element is that at the end of the session, things are different than when you started.

If you want classic sitcom, which keeps anything from changing from episode to episode, then it's probably not your best choice, though you can certainly do it.

Primetime Adventures is very specifically about doing episodic, multi-character storytelling, and one of the sample shows within it is literally a sitcom. I don't know what else you want.

The truth is, nobody really wants to play a long-term sitcom game. They're hard enough to write when you have comedy talent.

It's a real pain in the ass to come to the table every day with the expectation that you're going to be hilarious. Dramatic is easy: that grows out of situation.

Comedy is hard: that requires you personally to be funny.

I suppose we could break out #InSpectres, which is one of my favorite long-term, episodic, often extremely funny games. It leans heavily on the tropes of reality TV and the side confessional, which often works out.

@chakatfirepaw @Tim_Eagon @luxet That would certainly provide a wider framing experience that would play into actual ongoing gameplay.

But does it accord with the kind of stories and literature that inspire the Cthulhu mythos? I don't really think that it does, unfortunately.

Now, there are games already extant which play to that particular game style and still allow for engaging with "Cthulhuan phenomena." The 1986 West End Games Ghostbusters RPG (ghostbusterscities.com/media/g) is a fine example of a game which is specifically set up to do exactly that. So is the later InSpectres (preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/pr), which also takes the conceit that it's all being filmed as a reality TV show, including individual asides to comment on the action that's currently going on. It's really a brilliant take on using flashbacks and flash asides to inform ongoing play.

I would be willing to assert that the BRP Call of Cthulhu RPG is too heavy to do the "one-shot" playstyle that a lot of the source material almost demands. And that's why some of the other more recent, lighter weight RPGs seem to deliver better on that core competency.

30. Obskurstes #TTRPG, das ich gespielt habe, ist vermutlich #InSpectres. Da spielt man eine Truppe frischer Ghost Busters und etabliert seine eigene Geisterjagdfirma. #RPGaDay #pnpde

@yukamichi Interestingly, the first thing that comes to mind is #InSpectres which had some really cool mechanics in and of themselves – but there was a specific bit called "the confessional" where a player could specifically step to the side, narratively, and speak as if directly to a camera on a reality show to introduce new traits or change the fictional framing.

I always thought that was pretty neat.

12, the oldest game that I still play?

I don't really play old games anymore. I took a long hiatus from after being steeped in them in middle & high school years. I picked up Basic just to read at the 2009 or 2010 where it came out.

Later I read & , & started running for my kids.

The closest I come to old games are new editions of them like or or games inspired by them like .

Picture of the covers of the spiral-bound and staple-bound copies of the Cairn role playing game by Yohai Gal. The cover features the Cairn title in a Gothic font on top of a black and white illustration of a thick bramble with a crown a hung within it and a hand reaching out of it in the lower left corner. The impression of a castle or keep can be seen in the distance beyond the brambles.

Okay. #7TTRPGs that influenced me!

#AmberDiceless - VERY formative for me in learning to GM
#Deadlands - opened up more genres for me
#InSpectres - how I discovered the joy of players defining things
#DontRestYourHead - got me more into collaborative scenario creation
#Fiasco - my introduction to GMless games
#LadyBlackbird - opened up more effective ideas for prompt-based improv for me
#PbtA (in general) - got me thinking in terms of the story driving the rolls instead of vice/versa
