The A43 Black Prince Infantry Tank was an experimental development of the Churchill tank with a larger, wider hull and a QF 17-pounder (76 mm) gun. By the time the Black Prince prototypes had appeared in May 1945, the Sherman Firefly had proved itself in combat, the Comet tank was in service and the introduction of Centurion was imminent. All these tanks carried the QF 17-pounder or a derivative; all had better mobility than the Black Prince and the Centurion had frontal armour of comparable effectiveness. The Black Prince had become redundant and the project was abandoned with only six prototypes built.

The A13 Mk.III Cruiser Mk.V Covenanter was designed as a cheaper and lighter cruiser tank to replace the cruiser Mk. IV. It was armed with a two ponder gun and had 30mm armour. Problems with engines overheated made it unsuitable for deployment overseas, relegating it to training in the UK. Although the Mk. IV solved the overheating issues it was declared obsolete in 1943 and all remaining tanks scrapped.

A bridge-laying version of the Conevanter was developed and became the only A13s deployed operationally. A mine clearance version was produced but was not used operationally.

Despite being slow, cramped and armed with only a single machine gun, the Matilda I had some success in the Battle of France in 1940, owing to its heavy armour which was proof against the standard German anti-tank guns. Its weak armament made it unsuitable in combat against enemy armour, and the tank was obsolete before it even came into service. The Battle of France was the only time the Matilda I saw combat. After the fall of France, Matilda Mk. I tanks were withdrawn from service and used for training.

It should be noted that this is a completely different design to the more successful A12 Infantry Tank Mk. II Matilda II.
