Magical Tools of Problem Solving (August 2021)
If you've been on the Internet long enough, sooner or later you'll come across an old joke that goes something like,
“You only need two tools in life, duct tape and WD-40. If it’s not stuck and it’s supposed to be, use Duct Tape. If it’s stuck and it’s not supposed to be, use WD-40.”
Turns out that this meme did not originate on the Internet. Earliest recorded account is from comedy authors Jim Berg and Tim Nyberg, known as the Duct Tape Guys, and they have it in their 1995 book, "Duct Tape Book Two: Real Stories". Though it doesn't discount the possibility that the Duct-Tape & WD-40 joke originated earlier, since both duct-tape & WD-40 were invented just at the tail end of World War II (around 1940s-1950s).
Fun as it may be though, not all life's problems can be solved with water-repelling lubricant and/or cloth-based stretchy adhesive tape. God knows how many times I've had duct tape fails under extreme stress condition, and how some door or gate hinge just wouldn't budge no matter how much lubricant you pour on them. Nevertheless it's useful to have both around, because you must admit still so many problems can be solved with them. They're handy, almost magical even.
