I’m sure others have drawn this analogy, or even that it’s an intentional design model, but Mastodon instances feel like local ISPs from the early commercial internet to me. The local timeline feels like local Usenet groups; the federated timeline feels like the Usenet subscriptions supported at that ISP. Your identity being tied to the ISP’s email domain is similar, too.
I wonder if instances will evolve similarly, too. (I hope not.)
