Tokyo-based private firm ispace's second attempt to land on the moon has failed.

The ispace team said at a press conference that it lost contact with M2 when the craft was 192 metres above the Moon’s surface and descending faster than expected. An attempt to reboot M2 was also unsuccessful. nature.com/articles/d41586-025 #Space #Moon #ispace #HAKUTO_R #Lunarlanding

Officials at the #Tokyo headquarters of #Ispace said on Friday morning local time that they had not been able to get in contact with the #Resilience spacecraft and presumed it had crashed 💥 in the northern hemisphere of the lunar near side nytimes.com/2025/06/05/science

2 more years.
Yesterday #ispace 's #moonlanding of #resilience and #hakuto failed. One goal was to take a sample of moondust and to sell it to #NASA, but only for self-collection. For 5k $, they say. This meant the first private #mining contract in #space. The plan: produce accomplished facts, a binding precedent.
Now we have 2 more years to find new rules for space and to convince every player that we need those rules for the sake of a peaceful future and the security of our species.

It was early morning in Tokyo when the Hakuto-R Resilience lander of the Japanese company ispace inc. attempted the Moon landing. For the people who watched the conclusion of the first Hakuto-R lander's mission, the end of Resilience's mission unfortunately offered a sense of deja vu. This time, the telemetry transmission was interrupted less than two minutes before the Moon landing.
