The opening is also a perfect set up to show how the kaiju are getting smarter and stronger to where experienced pilots are almost beaten by them.

To me, Pacific Rim has one of the BEST opening scenes of any movie. Gipsy Danger and Knifehead, who to me is still the best design for a giant monster, emerging from the ocean on either side of a small fishing boat to give the sense of scale is still brilliant.
