#KnownSpace

@cstross @bitterkarella

I have a feeling that Larry Niven, author of "Neutron Star", would feel forced to explain to Trump that the moon most definitely *was* pulling its weight.

Xe might then ask how much Trump would pay to not reveal the fact that Trump's homeworld was a Puppeteer one, and Trump should have been disqualified under the natural-born citizen clause all along.

Half price books finds - The Fantasy Trip (missing one of the books), and Tales of Known Space: The Universe of Larry Niven - Found this the day after I found out about this series - so looking forward to reading it.
The Fantasy Trip just looked interesting to me, and seem like a good price even thou it is missing one of the books.

All of the #LarryNiven readers are no doubt thinking "early prototype Slaver Sunflower" at this point. (-:

The last #StarTrek #LowerDecks episode had a Kzin on a Ringworld. Of course, it was one of those cooperative ones that Nessus created.

I’ve just started reading Larry Niven’s 1970 novel, RINGWORLD. Really loving it just a few pages in. Curious where this one will go.

Such a different feel and pace from Clarke’s CHILDHOOD’S END. I’m enjoying the change.

Sci-Fi Dolphins from the eighties.

The first is from the Journal of the Traveller's Aid Society #6, 1980. I love the fact that the suit is double-hulled, with a small bubble that provides air. He doesn't have recognizable waldos (manipulator arms) although they're mentioned in the text.

The second is from Dragon #95, 1985, for the Ring World RPG. His suit is depicted with waldos.

Interestingly, the second one is a bit of a throwback--probably because of the older source material--in that the dolphins are unaltered. Humans just finally worked out how to communicate with them.

The former is one of the first examples of "Uplifted" dolphins (although it doesn't use that term) that have been enhanced in some ways by Humans or Ancients. 1980 seems to be the year we gave up on dolphins being our intellectual peers.

@Nuggz@hachyderm.io I’m a fan of #LarryNiven’s #KnownSpace universe. Its depiction of ā€œ#OrganLeggingā€ was *not* supposed to be an instruction manual

A three-quarters front view of a Lego sculpture of a Pierson's Puppeteer from Larry Niven's Known Space universe. This sapient being has two legs at the broad front of its body, and a single hind leg at the narrow back end. It has a single large eye in each of its two brainless flat heads. The camel-like hump between the two long necks is the braincase. The body is yellow (and somewhat dusty), the hooves and brain hump red, the eyes blue.A three-quarters rear view of a Lego sculpture of a Pierson's Puppeteer from Larry Niven's Known Space universe. #LarryNivens #KnownSpace has the galaxy core exploding, sending a radiation shockwave that'll kill anything in 20.000 years.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_the_C

The species most kwown for being cowards (Pierson's Puppeteers) runs away. While mankind continues as always. Simply ignoring the problem for the time being.

Leading to the following:

> "Maybe, it's humans who are the cowards, at the core."

There's some analogy to how we (don't) handle #ClimateChange somwhere…

Neutron Star is a 1968 short story collection which contains some of Larry Niven’s earliest Known Space Stories.

A good introduction to the Known Space tales. There’s a strong hard SF element, there are touches of humour and there’s danger and adventure.

Old-fashioned high-concept hard SF but with plenty of characteristic Larry Niven touches. Great stuff.

A Gift from Earth, an early (1968) Larry Niven Known Space novel. He's thought of as hard SF but in this case he's also interested in the social and political implications of technology. This is also a dystopian novel of sorts.

Interesting as an SF novel in which faster-than-light travel is impossible. The setting is bizarre- a plateau 40 miles above the surface of an otherwise uninhabitable planet.
