In 1990, a team led by Ralph Molnar recovered it

In 1996, Molnar referred it to Minmi, but not Minmi paravertebra.

It was then prepared by acid bath and CAT scanned. This new information revealed it was a different species to Mimni,

In 2015, Lucy G Leahey, et al, formally described and named Kunbarrasaurus ieversi. The name meaning "shield" in Mayi.

In 1989, a small aklyosaurian skeleton was found near Richmond, QLD, AU. It was collected in early 1990 by a team led by Ralph Molnar. It was originally given the name "Minmi sp." but after many years of preparation, including acid bath and CAT scan, it was reclassified as its own separate species, Kunbarrasaurus ieversi.

Kunbarra means "shield" in the Mayi language. The language of the traditional land owners where the fossil was found.
