William Hamilton, Scottish minister, contrasts the suffering around him with the life of beneficence that is to be Christianity (in a prior paragraph before this quote). He’s not only inveighing against crime but selfishness. These are the works of the graceless and ungodly.

How can you life a life of kindness and beneficence?

WILLIAM HAMILTON (1780-1835) SERMON VIII. THE CHRISTIAN LIFE "Is it Christianity that perpetuates the reign of poverty and wretchedness, fills our gaols, crowds our bridewells, and gives such constant employment to the officers of justice? These are the works of the graceless and ungodly, the men who neither know God nor obey the gospel of his Son."

James WC Pennington, Presbyterian pastor, reflects on differing views about revolutions. Everyone happy for more freedom for white people across both sides of the Atlantic, but were telling enslaved people to be patient.

Is it not absurd to focus on the few rare “good apples” when the norm is an abomination? (Even the best ones are still a crime?)

How can we be less patient with the suffering of others?

Pastor James WC Penington "During the last year or two we have heard of nothing but revolutions and the enlargements of the eras of freedom, on both sides of the Atlantic. Our white brethren everywhere are reaching out their hands to grasp more freedom. ... But when we speak of slavery, and complain of the wrong it is doing us, and ask to have the yoke removed, we are told, 'O, you must not be impatient, you must not create undue excitement. You are not so badly off, for many of your masters are kind Christian

Augustine, north African bishop, talks of criminal justice in the ideal city. He says torture must play no role in extracting a confession, because the victim will say anything to make the torture stop. It’s wicked.

Understood in the first century, but not the twenty-first, especially by those who claim church tradition. How can you be more merciful to the “might be innocent” around you?
