Today was part of our push not to use motorized private transport and so we #cycled to and from the #RailwayStation and took a train to #Plymouth and back. The #theatre's walking distance from the station.

The #dance performances are excellent: energetic and apt for the mood being portrayed and the young performers are extremely well choreographed. Looking round the audience, it was mostly people like me in their 50s and older (perhaps because it was a matinee performance). The cast got a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

The ballet will be visiting many #UK cities, including #London, #Southampton and #Salford.

I just got back from a contemporary #ballet performance of the #RockOpera #Quadrophenia, which was originally written by #PeteTownshend of #TheWho. It was performed at the #TheatreRoyalPlymouth and I have to say it was wonderful. The music is an #instrumental retelling of the original album and follows it almost exactly, with a few extras thrown in for good measure.

SOCAL • CELLO • CENTRIC June 2025: Composer Highlight #3

I’m participating in a concert series of new music this June! We’ll be performing all-original, string-centric music on three dates (see photo below for info).

To help promote this collaboration, I’ll be sharing features on the composers involved!

Today, say hi to Bevan Manson — we’ll be performing his work “Habanera You” for Cello Trio.

‘Habanera You’ is a sometimes light-hearted little suite for three cellos that touches on the habanera style in its first section. That gets interrupted by a fugato that grabs hold of a rhythmic motif from the beginning of the piece. This chugs along stealthily for a bit, ending in a question mark. 

A slow set of dissonant chords ‘in space’ brings back the habanera portion. A little motif at the end is used in the next section, a rather somber and more lyrical slow part. The melody breaks down into a few half-step motions which ‘beg’ for relief. 

They get it with an initially jolly romp of a Presto. The new material gets tossed back and forth in a small development, resulting in the habanera theme in new clothing stated exuberantly.

Today… it’s me! 😀 We’ll be premiering my new work for string trio, “Flight of Ecstasy”.


This new work for string trio incorporates some of the musical tropes characteristic of Nordic “symphonic metal” and employed by some of the composer’s favorite bands, such as Within Temptation and Nightwish. The goal of this work is to provide a fun, feverish, and driving experience for players and listeners alike, that all may sense the reckless freedom of pure personal expression. Rock on!

Today, say hi to Alex Bozman — we’ll be performing his work “Love Ye The Stranger” for Bass Viol and String Quartet.

Alex Bozman works in multiple disciplines. As a professional musician, he composes, arranges, plays different instruments (cello, violoncello piccolo, fretless bass, fretted strings both bowed and plucked, vocals, and more), and teaches many talented students. The genres he practices and performs the most are Classical Music, Avant Garde Music, Early Music, Latin Music, and Hindustani Classical Music.

Alex holds an MFA (Performer/Composer) from CalArts and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Music from UC Berkeley. His main composition teachers were Mel Powell, Daniel Rothman, Peter Otto, and Lucky Mosko; he also enjoyed lessons from Lou Harrison, Chen Yi, Mort Subotnick, and others. He has studied cello with Erika Duke, Cesare Pascarella, and Bonnie Hampton. He studies Hindustani (North Indian) classical music with Pt. Partha Chatterjee and previously the late Dr. Rajeev Taranath. Alex places high value on both his own continuing development as an artist and his duty as a teacher to subsequent generations.

In his musical compositions, he seeks the fascinating rather than alignment with any particular niche or ideology. Although obviously at home with the strings he has been called “a percussion composer,” and a “winds composer.” Recent compositions have employed a musical language that involves complex invented modes, an emphasis on colors, a breadth of compositional techniques, and often, extra-musical underpinnings.
