Possible move from self-hosted
I'm thinking of moving from self hosting. It was fun setting it up, but now it's running it's more routine. I haven't decided firmly yet, but I am thinking about where I might go. This is my thought.
## A UK based service
Something like mastodonapp.uk would have a relevant local feed, good user base for hash search, and local reach for posts. The downside is that some sites might block it due to the online safety act, even though this is unnecessary unless they either target UK users or have a significant number of UK users - in which case they are subject to the act whether or not they federate UK servers!
## A topic based server
I've been thinking about maybe mastodon.green. It has a low monthly charge, just under half what I'm paying for server hosting, though for a couple of Β£ a month I'd probably keep a VPS anyway. They also plant trees with part of your subscription π³
## Another Mitra based server
I like Mitra, it's lightweight and performant and I'm used to the interface. There are a few publicly open instances like wizard.casa and I could go back there. It is where I tried before installing
## Stay self hosted
This is always an option and what I'll do until I decide what to do.
Any suggestions?

Okay, there was a little April fools joke hidden inside this tread π There's no de-federation planned for 1 July 2025.
Tried to be a bit funny with the poll by not including any real "no" option, but then again, should "no built-in climate action" be an option anywhere these days?
That said, the poll is useful as it is. Thank you for voting in it. Most people voted with a strong "yes", followed by "π― π―".
Now is the time to take a principled stand for a greener social web! Now is the time for climate action.
I'm hereby giving three months notice before de-federating Mastodon.green from non-tree-planting fediverse servers, i.e. those who hasn't announced a credible plan to adopt the Green Fediverse Protocol by 1 July 2025.
This will only apply to servers with income, such as mastodon.social, pixelfed.social, tchncs.de, flipboard.com, chaos.social etc.
The months seem to be passing faster than I can write tree reports π Need to take a course in speed typing or something
Our fabulous Mastodon.green members have contributed to thousands of trees over the last few months π³
Thank you for making the world greener! π
Updated the blog with these reports:

February 2025, 591 trees
@X31Andy I'm glad you're happy with .green, and thanks for being a long time member.
We do have a European option, a Steady page. It's almost like Patreon, but made in Germany.
I've been happy on mastodon.green my only gripe is I have to maintain a Patreon account to pay the subscriptions. As a result of recent events I'm trying to decouple from USA based financial services.
How about some other options to pay the membership fees?
I keep getting this error when trying to create a company account on #MastodonGreen. I've enabled all (even third party!) cookies.
After the Twitter takeover, I joined Mastodon. The community quickly became my new home, worthy of being called social media.
I didn't leave #Xitter immediately, but at some point I couldn't stand the bot-fed outrage bubble anymore. About a year ago I left for good and havenβt looked back since.
Thank you @JohanEmpa for running #MastodonGreen and helping create an incredible #fediverse.
