Mohács, 1969. To mark the end of winter and spring’s arrival, the town of Mohács, near the Croatian border, holds a six-day festival at this time of year where people wear colourful masks to ward off winter and evil spirits. I’ve never been, but it sounds like a lot of fun with plenty of food, drink, and general rowdiness.

Mohács, 1956. Sadly, floods along the Danube are nothing new. The one in March 1956 was particular bad as it was caused by the sudden melting of ice from an especially cold winter. The ice dams that formed had to be bombed by the authorities. Mohács in southern Hungary was badly impacted, as we can see in this photo of some of those displaced by the flooding receiving a meal in a local hotel.

Beim traditionellen Busójárás (Umzug des Busó - Monster mit Holzmaken, Hörnern, und Pelzen) wird am Ende der Veranstaltung eine Strohpuppe, die den Winter symbolisiert, auf den Scheiterhaufen gebracht und verbrannt. Dazu tanzen die Busó, Mädchen in traditionellen Schokatzen-Trachten und Jankeles (Lumpenträger) um das Feuer. So geht Fasching (Farsang) in Süd-Ungarn (Mohács... gleich bei uns um die Ecke).
