There is an interesting reconstruction of a #Monacan dwelling here. One of the challenges I want to offer my students is to think about how traditional design can inform contemporary design. lynchburgmuseum.org/blog/2018/

Nice quote from historic researcher Jeffrey Hantman about his experience working to repatriate human remains held in museums to the #Monacan people: "I have never felt better about anything I have accomplished in my career." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_A #NAGPRA

Interesting note here on page 61 that #thomasjefferson was plagued by #samplebias because of the way he decided to excavate the #Monacan burial mound north of Charlottesville. Because of that, and I suspect some racial bias as well, he thought it was thrown together in "utmost confusion". No, we now know there was a clear order because of more modern methods but he could not see it. #archeology

Reading #MonacanMillenium (the only book I know of about the #Monacan people whose territory historically included the #cville area) there is no mention of #eugenics until page 11. It is a crucial part of understanding government efforts to harm natives in #virginia , but also it is unfortunate that the weight of discrimination has become such a part of their story.

Greenstone projectile point identified from the Overseer's House site.
A small number of #ProjectilePoints have been recovered this season, (including those crafted of quartz, flint, and greenstone) revealing how much of Montpelier's #landscape was integral to life in the #Manahoac and #Monacan nations before #colonization.
