I don’t know a ton about #wine by the standards of wine snobs, but I remember some of what I see and taste. There are few wines I won’t try, though I’m a bit partial to Spanish reds as a result of having to work in Spain for a while. That said, I’d never heard of #monastrell grapes until now, but #Infinito is a good wine made with them, at least by whatever barbarous standard one measures my palate.

Also I really like Spanish wine labels when they put the effort in.

2019 Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell
Jumilla, Spain

$15.94 / 89

From the Jumilla DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida), which is the highest quality tier of Spanish wine. Like last week’s bottle, the Juan Gil Silver Label is certified organic.

I’ve been looking forward to comparing the silver label Monastrell with last week’s Honoro Vera, also from Juan Gil. So, let’s get into it.

Nose of blackberries pouring into the decanter, followed by a one hour decant. Translucent cherry on the pour into the glass. Mild cherry on the nose, similar to the Honoro Vera with the addition of some tobacco smoke.

It’s fairly leggy but those legs take longer to develop than usual. Higher viscosity, maybe? This is 15% ABV. Deep purple in color.

Dark fruit is front and center on the palate. Blackberries, black cherries perhaps. Leather, black pepper, gravel. Bright and spicy acidity, medium-plus chalky tannins. Dry. Bold, medium to full bodied. An interesting assortment of flavors lend this one a lively personality. I can definitely see this wine going well with smoked meats, though I did not have it with food.

I would put this wine ahead of the Honoro Vera but behind the Cline Mourvèdre in it’s flavor profile, understanding the terroir of the two is not the same.

In the center of the photo, bottle of red wine. A glass of wine sits to the left in the background, with a half-full decanter to the right. A cork sits in front of the decanter. The text on the bottle’s label reads Juan Gil in a cursive font, with Jumilla below.

The wine sits on an aged wrought iron table with a weathered wood backdrop.

2020 Juan Gil Honoro Vera Organic Monastrell
Jumilla, Spain

$10.94 / 87

From the Jumilla DOP (Denominación de Origen Protegida), which is the highest quality tier of Spanish wine. Certified organic. 14.5% ABV. Decanted for one hour.

Translucent cherry on the pour, deep ruby in the glass with medium legs. Mild cherry aromas. Cherry and unripe blackberry on the palate, medium acidity with spice, powdery tannins, a little oily. Black pepper, smoke. Bold, medium body. Slightly tart, somewhat of a gravelly sensation on the tongue. Off dry, medium finish.

Good QPR with this one. Very serviceable, easy drinking. Not marvelous by any stretch but for ten dollars I’m not complaining. Would buy again for those reasons. Bought at the same time as a bottle of Juan Gil silver label Monastrell, which cost 50% more. Hope to compare the two soon.

Had second glass with penne pasta featuring mushrooms, spinach, onion, cherry tomatoes and ricotta salata cheese. Blackberry becomes more prominent somehow, with enhanced baking spice. The wine is up to the task without dominating the food.

If you were the sort to buy a record, etc. solely based on its beautiful and compelling artwork (guilty as charged), you might find yourself drawn to this wine. The label is indeed beautiful.

A bottle of red wine. A glass of wine is to the right, with a decanter of wine in the left background. A cork printed with the date 2020 lies in front of the decanter. A multicolored tiled wall is in the background. The prominent text on the label reads Honoro Vera. A colorful artist’s painting is in the center of the label, depicting a grape vine, the dirt it’s planted in and its roots below. This seems to be floating in mid air.
