Day 8: A Slice Of Life
I just had to get this drama on the list and today's category is as good a fit as any. My Liberation Notes - In some ways it feels like a hyper realistic slice of life and in others very dreamy. Absolutely a slow burn so the correct state of mind is needed when viewing. But if you're in the right place it is a beautiful drama in all aspects; both happy and sad.
@jcurries My Mister is great. Try watching My Liberation Notes (same writer) too. Might be hit or miss as it is quite “special”. However, I like it even more than My Mister. The tension, atmosphere and dialogue(/monologue) in some sections is just exquisite

@JillsJoy has experience with an asynchronous watch group and preferred it because she could watch at her own speed. If we have watchers in 3 continents, it's probably the only practical way to deal with schedule. I think both series are 20 episodes long so it's a 20-week commitment if we watch one show/week.

It’s not for everyone but I love, love #MyLiberationNotes. It is slow, thoughtful and deliberate. It’s not for those looking for pure escapism or [smut] between pretty people or gratuitous violence or fairy tale endings. That frog conversation between Gu and Mi-Jeong was especially memorable to me as someone who’s had the same weird thought processes in life. That episode about their mother near the end? Chef’s kiss. This is a drama which has a shrine in my imaginary #kdrama favourites gallery.

Thinking of rewatching #MyLiberationNotes but the weather is soo grey these weeks that I might get too depressed. So maybe something with spring vibes might be better, ha 🌱 #kdrama

Well, #MyLiberationNotes was by the same writer so it gives you some ideas. Personally, I found the show to be extremely gripping, which is entertainment for me. The characters are super interesting and you root for them to sort their way through situations that seem impossible. There was exceptional face-acting by the leads, in particular.
I fell like I'd like you to watch it but I can understand if you choose not to.

@EllenInEdmonton Or, rather than "want to watch", "feel like I ought to watch" - but since I watch Dramas for entertainment, a #KDrama universally lauded, and praised unceasingly explicitly FOR its unrelenting bleakness (even its colours, by your toot), is going to linger at the bottom of my PTW. It took me 2 years to summon the strength to watch #MyLiberationNotes and that one was a laugh riot in comparison, by the sound of things

#kdrama does people hitting bottom terribly well! #MyMister and #MyLiberationNotes by the same writer are 2 that really illustrate people struggling through desperation in order to get to a better place. I like both a lot but you have to be in the right headspace to watch them,
@jcurries It is taking a conscious effort to force myself to watch ep 1, such is my reaction to seeing him. In the same way that I will sit through Dramas just because of the cast so I have avoided many Dramas specifically because he was in them. I'm starting this for Kim Ji Won after she impressed me in #MyLiberationNotes
I have had this kind of visceral reaction to an actor before and eventually been disabused of it, so I am determined to give him 1 last chance to pull that off 🙂

My Liberation Notes

A slow-paced, slice-of-life drama about 3 siblings who work in Seoul but live in the countryside & commute. See the comment about slow dramas.
At this pace with sparse dialogue, the acting has to be phenomenal to keep our interest & convey meaning - body position, a glance, a sigh, a gesture mean so much. No action, little romance, & characters that are annoying & unremarkable mean that the drama is the story & it delivers.
You wonder what is the point? Is this all there is? Will I ever know myself? How do I navigate a relationship without giving up myself? The development of the characters as they try to discover themselves & their purposes takes us on a journey as we ponder the same questions.
Detailed sound & cinematography w/ interesting symbolism are great at contrasting the city & country scenes.
