It’s that time in the postal calendar year when postal authorities start issuing stamps for every day use — known in the trade as “Definitives” — with the next year’s postal rates. This was the first such definitive issued in 2003, when you only needed a 48¢ stamp on your first-class envelope, that was ready for use as of Jan. 1, 2004 when you were going to need a 49¢ stamp on your envelope.

The first stamp ever issued by any postal authority in the world to contain a reference to Christmas. Stamp was designed as a tribute to Queen Victoria and her “vaster empire”, helpfully noted in red on this map of the world.

Issued this day in 1986. Sc 1121. Canadian Locomotives (1925-1945) — 4: CP Class H1c 4-6-4 type. Design: Earl Roch.
Locomotives, you may or may not know, generally come with that three digit description before “type”. In this stamp, for example, we have a 4-6-4 locomotive. These three digits refer to the wheel configuration on the machine. As you can see we have two pairs of small wheels at the front — 4 — followed by three pairs of big wheels in the middle — 4-6 — and finally, two pairs of small wheels at the back, under the cab: 4-6-4.
