Here's an excellent article from earlier this month on Slash Walls and the problem of deer overpopulation by John Litvaitis, "Hay-scented fern’s dominance in forest understories is just one example of the long-term negative influence of heavy browsing. Research from western New York showed that deer not only reduced the abundance of native plants, but their feeding patterns eventually altered the species composition of seeds lying dormant in the soil. As a result, species that are reduced or eliminated cannot readily return, even if deer numbers later diminish, and forest composition may be impacted for decades or longer." In my experience, slash walls by themselves aren't sustainable at the level we need to replace proper habitats and understory, especially in riparian zones. At this juncture, we really need policy and the #NYDEC and #NYDEP to step in and allow more tags for hunters, and safe reintroduction of large predators. #deer #nydep #slashwalls #newyork
