#NaviarHaiku

2026-02-04

This is a track I created for the 630th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. This week’s prompt mentions a falling leaf, and so did the poem a few weeks ago, so my usual strategy of looking for themes in preset names was not available since I didn’t want to use the same sounds. I was still able to find sounds that fit the theme.

Here’s my track for the 629th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. It’s the middle of winter and we have been experiencing some of the snow and freezing temperatures from the edge of the storm sweeping the US, so it was difficult to relate to the prompt poem about an autumn storm.

A dark, stormy sky looms over a field of corn, with a poetic text overlay that reads, "autumn storm— the scarecrow falls first." The image captures the mood of an impending storm.

I submitted a track for the 628th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. Believe it or not, at one point this track built up to a trip-hop type beat with a heavy plucked bass synth. I scratched all of that and stuck with a simpler overall composition.

I submitted a track for the 627th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. I decided to write this song in 6/4 becauseI I have only ever composed slow ambient tracks in 4/4, so I thought I should challenge myself. I also challenged myself to finish and post this track all from my iPad.

I submitted a track for the 625th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. I started off by opening up a new set in Ableton Note and created a track with an instrument from the “Voice” section of the core library. This was in response to the mention of a voice in the prompt poem.

I submitted a track for the 624th #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. I came up with eight loops that I liked in Ableton Note, but noticed the track was sounding “cheery.” I was expecting a different overall sound because I thought I had set the scale mode to a minor scale. When I went to double-check, I noticed scale mode was off. I had inadvertently written the track in C major so I transposed it.

The latest Naviar Haiku:

Caged bird
Glaring with envious eyes
at butterflies!

So I think, how does one convey envy in music? It occurs to me that envy can be considered a 'mask' layer for an array of grief, longing, and violence.

The track I submitted a couple weeks ago for #NaviarHaiku was more ambient than what I normally work on and truly inspired me. For this week, I started out in #Ableton Note and came up with a basic structure before moving over to my computer. Not much changed after I used the full DAW. In fact, one plug-in I added near the end created some buzzing that caused me to go back and re-upload the track! It goes to show that more is not always better when it comes to my process. on.soundcloud.com/4QgsSbB8k2gb

Earlier this week, I posted a track for #NaviarHaiku536. I haven't participated in the #NaviarHaiku #Music Challenge recently, but I have been meaning to. The prompt last week was a haiku composed by John Hinks aka FlownBlue who passed away recently. I did not know John, but I would listen to his tracks and he would occasionally "Like" mine. Despite not knowing him, I was still saddened by his passing and composed this somber ambient track as a small tribute to him. soundcloud.com/thgirwnhoj/navi

I was inspired by the 3-track album posted by Brian Crabtree aka tehn on the llllllll.co forum titled Farthest Skies that is a minimal arrangement of arpeggiated synth sounds. When I saw the prompt for #NaviarHaiku, I thought about trying to create a track with the sound of thunder panned left, a minimal blend of arpeggios, ending with the sound of thunder panned right. I thought it wouldn't take me too long, but I got so caught so caught up in it! I learned my lesson. soundcloud.com/thgirwnhoj/stru

I primarily use SoundCloud for publishing my tracks, mostly because it is the preferred platform for the #DisquietJunto and the #NaviarHaiku Music Challenge. I also recently became a paid subscriber and started distributing to the major streaming platforms, so I feel committed. I will be curious to see what comes of this potential sale and what it means for me and other artists. With the recent sale of Bandcamp, the future of independent music could look very different. musicbusinessworldwide.com/sou

I made my first submission for #WeeklyBeats 2024. I spent most of my music-making time last year on #DisquietJunto and #NaviarHaiku tracks. I did complete over 20 tracks for each of those projects, but I noticed when compiling clips for my 2023 Audio Journal submission for the Disquiet Junto, that there were still many weeks that I started a project and didn't finish it. So, this year I am going to attempt a project where the stated goal is to complete a track each week. weeklybeats.com/thgirwnhoj/mus

My track for the 2022 Audio Journal was my first submission to the #DisquietJunto. All the audio recordings I used to create that track came from unfinished projects I made that year. This year, my submission for the Audio Journal (#Disquiet0626) contains parts from twelve finished tracks. I completed many more throughout the year, but without projects like #DisquietJunto and #NaviarHaiku I would not have the motivation or support to do so. Check out my 2023 track here: soundcloud.com/thgirwnhoj/audi

Found the time to submit a song for weekly challenge.

This one was created using a generative patch on the Behringer Crave with various delays and reverbs which was then layered.

Unfortunately I lost quite a few patches when I upgraded Affinity because I thought they were saved but they weren't, must get round to redoing them.
