I remember Nell McCafferty from the very start of my political consciousness as a child. I remember most recently footage of her in Helen Cammock’s Turner Prize winning artwork “The Long Note.” She recalls a community face-off with the Brits in Derry: history-making, rule-breaking, victoriously feminist, and furiously funny, all from dark circumstances. Not long ago in Ireland women weren't served pints in pubs. (This was after they were prohibited from pubs altogether.)
In the early 1970s, Nell McCafferty and 30 other women entered Neary’s pub off Grafton Street. Each ordered a brandy. Once poured, they ordered a single pint of Guinness. The bartender refused to serve it.
The women drank the brandies and left without paying.
Afterwards, McCafferty said, "He refused to serve, we refused to pay."
