Israel continues to block doctors from entering Gaza, surgeon says

Dr Ahmed Mokhallati, a former head of plastic surgery at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, says healthcare needs in the territory are immense.

“I think this time is very critical,” Mokhallati told Al Jazeera.

“In the middle of the noise of the ceasefire, people don’t notice that nothing has changed on the ground. We still have the famine… There is no electricity, no water, no petrol, no food supplies, no medicines,” he said.

“And despite all of this, Israel is still controlling the borders, with very minimal access to everything in Gaza.”

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has denied permission for most doctors who have asked to enter the territory to treat the sick and wounded, Mokhallati said.

“So, what’s happening is a continuation of the ethnical cleansing. What’s happening is a continuation of this genocide on the ground,” he added.

The surgeon said that all patients with congenital anomalies, heart disease, diabetes and cancer have not had treatment for more than two years, and many have died because of the lack of care.

“So now, we are faced with thousands of sick people who need immediate intervention and treatment in all aspects. And adding to this, more than 15,000 to 20,000 patients are awaiting evacuation out of Gaza, where the collapsed systems are unable to provide them with the services they need.”

@stephanie : A couple of days ago Sigrid Kaag said that before Oct. 7 (2023) around 2000 trucks with aid drove into Gaza.

That was before nearly all infrastructure was destroyed, and while there were stocks in the strip.

In addition to the restriction to 300 trucks, Israel has closed the Rafah crossing, to remain closed tomorrow and possibly longer. Note that today a Turkish vessel carrying 900 tons of aid for Gaza has set sail to Egypt (https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/turkiye-s-17th-goodness-ship-sets-sail-carrying-humanitarian-aid-for-gaza/3716869).

Israël houdt grensovergang bij Rafah dicht tot woensdag

Israël houdt de grens bij de stad Rafah in Gaza in ieder geval tot en met morgen dicht, melden Israëlische functionarissen. De grensovergang met Egypte blijft gesloten omdat Hamas nog niet alle 28 gedode gijzelaars heeft overgedragen aan Israël. Tot nu toe zijn de stoffelijke overschotten van vier gijzelaars terug in Israël.

In het staakt-het-vuren is afgesproken dat Hamas alle dode gijzelaars binnen drie dagen moet overdragen. De deadline was gisteren. Het Rode Kruis meldde eerder dat het verwacht dat het veel langer gaat duren, omdat het moeilijk is om de stoffelijke resten in Gaza onder het puin terug te vinden. Ook zou niet van alle dode gijzelaars bekend zijn waar ze zijn.

Israël staat minder humanitaire hulp en brandstof toe voor Gaza

Vanaf morgen wordt alleen brandstof die noodzakelijk is voor "specifieke doeleinden voor de humanitaire infrastructuur" toegelaten in Gaza. Het gaat dan om gas en benzine voor bijvoorbeeld ziekenhuizen. Dat heeft het Israëlische leger de VN laten weten. De reden is dat Hamas nog lang niet alle dode gijzelaars via het Rode Kruis heeft overgedragen aan Israël.

Ook worden 300 vrachtwagens met hulpmiddelen Gaza binnengelaten, de helft van wat was afgesproken. Volgens de VN zouden ongeveer 600 vrachtwagens per dag met hulpmiddelen naar Gaza gaan. In het akkoord over de eerste fase van de wapenstilstand tussen Israël en Hamas stond dat Israël meer humanitaire hulp zou toestaan.

RAMALLAH, October 9, 2025 (WAFA) – Israeli forces and intelligence services raided the headquarters of the Union of Charitable Societies in Wadi al-Joz, occupied Jerusalem on Tuesday, detained the union's current and former heads, and prevented a planned social event.

The Jerusalem Governorate said that Israeli troops raided the headquarters and detained Majdi al-Zughayer, president of the Union of Charitable Societies in Jerusalem, and Youssef Qari, former president of the union, to prevent a social event announced by the union, under the auspices of the Palestinian National Authority.

The raid was carried out under an order from the so-called Minister of National Security in the occupation government, Itamar Ben-Gvir, prohibiting meetings of clubs and associations working in the fields of culture and sports in Jerusalem, on the grounds that the activity is affiliated with the Palestinian National Authority.

These measures are part of Israel's policy aimed at restricting the work of Jerusalemite institutions and preventing any activities of a national or social nature within the occupied city.

The intrigue: The deal now before Hamas is significantly different than the one the U.S. and a group of Arab and Muslim countries had previously agreed on, due to Netanyahu's intervention.

Behind the scenes: On Sunday, White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner met for six hours with Netanyahu and his confidant Ron Dermer.

- Netanyahu managed to negotiate several edits into the text, in particular on the conditions and timetable for Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.

- The new proposal ties Israel's withdrawal to the progress of disarming Hamas, and gives Israel a veto over the process.

- Even if all conditions are met and three phases of withdrawal are completed, Israeli forces will still remain within a security perimeter inside Gaza "until Gaza is properly secure from any resurgent terror threat." That could mean indefinitely.

Behind the scenes: Officials from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey were furious over the changes, according to sources with knowledge.

- The Qataris even tried to convince the Trump administration not to release the detailed plan on Monday due to those objections. [...]

The seeds of the plan President Trump presented on Monday to end the war in Gaza were planted three weeks earlier, when Israel bombed Qatar in a failed attempt to assassinate Hamas leaders.

The big picture: The Israeli strike united Arab leaders in outrage at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intensified calls within Israeli society for a deal to free the remaining hostages and end the war.

- At first outraged by the strike and the destabilization it could cause, Trump's advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner soon saw the crisis as an opportunity to end the war, four sources with direct knowledge tell Axios.

- They noticed that "the Arabs were speaking with one voice," even if it was to shout at Israel, a Trump adviser familiar with the discussions told Axios. "It became clear, particularly to Steve, that this rallying cry that seemed negative at first could be turned into something positive."

- When they heard about the Israeli strike in Doha they were furious, feeling Dermer deceived them, the sources say. Dermer later claimed he didn't learn about the planned strike until later.
