Gauteng Court Verdict on Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester

The Gauteng High Court will deliver judgment on Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester documentary minutes before its scheduled release, as questions arise about payments to Dr. Nandipha Magudumana and whether the timing is a publicity stunt.

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria is set to rule on whether Netflix’s highly anticipated true-crime series, Beauty and the Bester, will be allowed to stream in South Africa. The three-part documentary, which unpacks the life and crimes of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his partner, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, is scheduled for release at 9 a.m. on Friday.

What makes the timing unusual is that judgment in the urgent application brought by Bester and Magudumana will be handed down just half an hour before the documentary goes live. Many are asking: is this a coincidence, or a calculated marketing move?

Court documents have revealed that Magudumana was paid for archived material used in the production of the documentary. While Netflix insists the payment was standard practice, critics argue it could undermine her claims that the series infringes on her rights. Legal experts have also pointed out that if she benefitted financially, it may weaken her argument that the documentary is damaging.

The pair’s legal team argue that the series could prejudice their ongoing criminal trial by influencing public opinion and potentially tainting witnesses. The State and media outlets, however, stress the public’s right to access information and hold powerful figures accountable.

The debate has spilled onto social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram. Some South Africans feel the documentary should air without restrictions.

  • One X user posted: “If she took money from Netflix, how can she now claim defamation?”
  • Another wrote: “Blocking a documentary feels like hiding the truth. Let South Africans see it.”

On TikTok, content creators are already dissecting trailers and speculating about courtroom drama, with hashtags like #BeautyAndTheBester and #NetflixSA trending.

The judgment could set a precedent for how South African courts handle cases where true-crime storytelling collides with ongoing legal proceedings. If the interdict is granted, Netflix may be forced to delay the global release of Beauty and the Bester. If dismissed, South Africans will be able to stream the documentary immediately after the ruling.
