#NewCaw

2025-03-06

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I posted an update here. Almost two years...

Since I've stopped the work on #NewCaw, I have concentrated mostly on university and struggling with my lack of concentration.
However, I have now finished my Bachelor of Science!

Since due to various reasons I will only start my Master of Science later that year, I have a few months in which I want to do a few projects to figure out a direction for myself.
So, hopefully I post a few more updates here soon!

Thanks to everyone who supported us through the years - either as users, bug reporters, testers, packagers or occasional contributors.

We're sorry that did not come in to being. But for those using Mastodon and the Fediverse, we're sure there's other great clients out there that could use your support.

Development of is suspended indefinitely.

@CodedOre was leading the rewrite, but is too busy with university commitments - mastodon.online/@CodedOre/1103
@ibboard was considering stepping down but hadn't announced anything.

Musk has killed Twitter as a platform, so NewCaw's original focus on multi-platform support is dead. There are other Mastodon clients available. The dev team don't have the time/interest to build another.

Hey everyone, just to update you on the situation with #NewCaw.

Since two months, I'm in a semester where I work full-time on a project in the university full time, meaning I spend pretty much each full weekday on it.
This meant I had not a lot of time to work on #NewCaw. Adding to that, I'm lacking the motivation to continue the work, as I'm not using Mastodon much at the time. Therefore, when I have time again for projects outside of university, I want to focus on a new one.

Reply to a Twitter question (twitter.com/medeoTL/status/162):

Cawbird's is very much still alpha software. Some stuff won't work. Things may break.

But the source code is available at github.com/CodedOre/NewCaw/ and @ibboard occasionally builds packages from `main` plus some extras for openSUSE Tumbleweed at build.opensuse.org/package/sho

A few things happened this weekend:

Besides a few fixes, #NewCaw can now show when a link you added to your user page was verified by the server.

And today, I was able to merge the work of @ibboard to like and repost the posts. First time #NewCaw has some interactivity!

I hope that I can add a few bigger things in the coming weeks.

Since my term ended now, I'm planning to work again on #NewCaw.

I hope I can show something soon!

Well, hello everyone!
Since I haven't posted an update since months again, here is a small update:

While I was busy in the last time with university, half of the work on #NewCaw was rendered pointless...

I have just now merged the branch with the rework on how accounts and sessions are managed, also thanks to @ibboard who has provided the last fixes needed to make it work.
However, these fixes also included the removal of the Twitter backend, as there isn't an API for it anymore.

If the "Third Part App ban" hadn't killed us off, this definitely would have!

It's a shame to see Twitter go down like this. Slowly drilling holes in their own boat.

Hopefully we can get completed before Twitter tanks completely!

Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead 🧡

@thomholwerda @cawbird Well, @CodedOre has been working on it for a while now. Because #NewCaw was our planned rewrite in pure Vala to support Mastodon as well as Twitter.

I've just been fixing up a few bits and packaging it πŸ™‚

What's that? A development build of @cawbird #NewCaw packaged on #OpenBuildService? πŸ‘€

(Note: REALLY unstable and untested at this point!)

What's that? I've got initial functionality to like and boost toots in #Cawbird 2.0 #NewCaw?

(Posted from the web, to be boosted by @cawbird through the app!)

Don't mind me. Just running development builds of #Cawbird 2.0 (#NewCaw) in read-only mode on Twitter and Mastodon.

Given recent changes at Twitter and the on-going actions of @elonmusk, the development of with support is more important than ever.

If anyone can help @CodedOre and @ibboard build the new app then it would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, we went through the arbitrary "it's still v1" API changes, the end of streaming, _and_ the introduction of the global request caps.

There was a scare about paid dev accounts before, but we survived.

Let's see what happens next.

But will support Mastodon as well!
