This is a picture of a 1m or 3ft high statue on a pedestal of the penguin mascot wearing a matching hat and apron of white and green stripes holding a sign with the English word "open" in its flippers. The door it's placed in front of has been painted green. Above it is a sticker of a torii gate, some animals, and the Japanese for "Omiya station." On the pedestal it reads "store manager" also in Japanese.

From a distance I thought this was a temple. But as I got closer I realized this isn't that. I cannot shake the suspicion that this is a place of commerce but Google doesn't have it listed. It's pretty, big, *and* intriguing. #Omiya ward #Saitama #Japan #日本 #埼玉県 #さいたま市 #大宮区

A multi-storey building built in old Japanese style. It's mansion-sized (in the English language sense), surrounded by a wall. The footprint of this building is rectangular but the higher up one looks the more chaotic it becomes with randomly protruding bays and nesting roofs. Shot on an overcast day.

The bell tower is in the background. It's the typical wooden gazebo structure with an ornate roof. It's quite big (this is next to a big temple and cemetery). The roof is mostly obscured by foliage from the surrounding trees, which is still bright and green. In the foreground is a little area for people to sit on blue low stools around a similarly constructed table. And a couple of stone lanterns.

Picture taken from inside the shrine grounds at about a 45-degree angle. Romon is the big, main gate. It's two storeys tall, wooden with ornate patterns, a small balcony around the top floor, a big tiled roof, and mostly painted bright red. There are a few worshippers in the shot.

A century old massive tree was cut down seemingly ages ago. The stump they left is still the size of two humans stacked on top of each other. I guess removing it and the roots would be a major undertaking so they just left it. They built a curb around it where it narrows the road in the very foreground of the picture. A small wooden fence surrounds the stump. Beyond that, a black guardrail with bright yellow arrows alerts motorists to its existence. There is a wooden lantern to the right of it. They line the path towards the shrine that runs roughly perpendicular behind lantern and stump. The background is a patchwork of homes, trees, and overcast sky.

Overhead is a road bridge and I'm standing under it looking parallel down it. The space under the bridge here is filled with buildings, so we're looking at a wall. The wall is covered with stuff, mostly black tags. Japan's graffiti problem isn't as big as other country's but it does exist.

A boxy looking two-storey building that at least looks like it's built with bricks. At the bottom is a storefront whose shutters are down and the butchery name sign above it is in advanced decay. The plastic orange awning is in tatters. There is a smokestack running alongside the building on the right that's gotten rusty. The single window on the upper floor is covered by white tarp.

We are looking over the top of a truck cut off at the bottom and past a high rise building under construction on the right at the center, where a building shaped like a rocket stands in the middle of it all. It's 5-6 storeys tall. The building is a round booster rocket and a miniature space shuttle is at the top. It's coated in golden metal plating. Both the building under construction and some low nondescript buildings are blocking the view a bit. There is another big blocky building in the background and just a bit of hazy sky in the upper right hand corner.

A scene from a side alley. There is a 1.5m or 4ft white wall, that somebody has gratified a roughly heart shaped being with big eyes on. It's thinking "yo!" according to the thought bubble to its right. Behind the wall are nondescript buildings. To the left of googly eyes and in front of the wall stands a pole, at the top of which is a sign for 24-hour paid parking. It's occupied according to the sign below although the Kanji character is partially missing. I don't remember if it's broken or if this is a frequency issue with my camera.

This is a big entrance gate interrupting a tall hedge. I think there is a shrine and banqueting area for weddings behind it. The gate is black and a rope with zigzag streamers is hanged across the top third.

In an area where the ground is covered by pebbles somebody has amassed a small pile of red fallen leaves, ostensibly to be picked up later. The pile contrasts nicely against the rocks. In the background is a massive torii gate that's also red. Some shrinegoers walk along a paved path in the background, the rest is pebbles, trees, a couple of buildings, and sky.
