The RAMSES mission design was not approved until it could demonstrate no possibility of creating a hazard.

Likewise for #OSIRISAPEx : lpi.usra.edu/sbag/documents/Ap .

We have strict instructions to not make piles of rock fall from the sky.

NASA's Science Mission Directorate has posted an updated Request for Information from any group interested in using the #Janus spacecraft currently in storage to fly by the asteroid #Apophis around its 2029 flyby of Earth: nspires.nasaprs.com/external/s{F77502A1-B310-35A0-1ACB-B24E17578FE3}

Responses are due by October 28.

This would accompany the #RAMSES and #OSIRISAPEx spacecraft visiting Apophis before and after the flyby and everyone on Earth who will be observing the flyby as it happens.

NASA's Science Mission Directorate has issued a Request for Information for plans to use the Janus spacecraft currently in storage to fly by the asteroid #Apophis in 2029: nspires.nasaprs.com/external/v

They would accompany the #Ramses and #OSIRISAPEx missions to the asteroid and everyone who will be observing it from Earth.

Discussion of the #RAMSESmission proposal from ESA to rendezvous with #Apophis before the 2029 flyby; for which a decision needs to be made soon.

Operations plan notes that orbiting the asteroid would be impossible during the flyby.

(Again, the #OSIRISAPEx mission from NASA will catch up with Apophis only after the flyby; but even then it will mostly formation-fly and make hyperbolic passes rather than orbiting.)

Five years from today, asteroid #Apophis will make a very close flyby.

There will be many Earth-based observations, including by #TeamRadar, and the #OSIRISAPEx mission will get a spacecraft out there after the flyby.

Meanwhile, OSIRIS-APEX (as it is now known) is on its way for a close flyby of the Sun on Jan 2, 2024.
Current distance from Sun: 91.62 mil km
Perihelion: 74.18 mil km
Flyby of asteroid Apophis: Apr 2029

The spacecraft was not designed to get this close to the Sun; the spacecraft will stay in a fixed orientation with respect to the Sun and use one of its solar arrays as a shield. Most instruments will be turned off until Mar/Apr.
