Unfortunately, with the #Olympics, the people you describe may not be able to achieve the 15 seconds of glory they've trained their entire life for because of some elaborate scheme originating in a secret drug lab in Moscow, or some exchange of favours arrangement between a sports federation and a judge of their event to ensure an opponent who may not have trained quite as vigorously wins that event.
