Because of the #Netflix release model, and the subject matter, there's not much talk about #Ooku #大奥 that just dropped 10 episodes at once.
The plot is basically an #AlternativeHistory story of Japan suffering from a male-only epidemic that mainly kills healthy young men, including the Tokugawa Emperor. His death is covered up, his nursemaid steals power, and he is replaced by his illegitimate daughter until she can give birth to a son to take over.
The 'harem' in the inner sanctum (the titular 大奥) is replaced with samurai to isolate healthy soldiers from the pandemic, and Japan's isolationist #SakokuPolicy is created to hide the loss of the male population to protect the country from foreign invasion. They seclude the court and explain away the Emperor's new all-male 'harem' by explaining that he's gay.
Things don't go as planned, and the story shows how #AlternateJapan ends up with a Matriarchal society with some acknowledged Empresses, and where samurai are sold as prostitutes. I can't explain how complex and well thought out the story is, except by pointing at how many awards it has won.
