Back to my roots today, winding coils for an audio installation…

A white plastic 3D-printed bobbin sits on a lined notebook. The bobbin is wound in thin enamelled copper wire and the two ends poke out of it. In the background is my bench with a cheeky I Love Hackney mug crashing the picture.

Community printing workshop today in Hackney

A pair of tables in a community hall with printing blocks and ink scattered around. There are two large pieces of paper with brick outlines printed on them forming a wall pattern. Inside some of the bricks are short messages written by residents about their local community and resources

In my happy place today: sitting on a box outside in the middle of a zoo, writing and pushing software updates over the air to a string of giant illuminated Xmas baubles

The dream team! @garyokeefe and me at the end of last night's (somewhat wet) Hour House finale event with Output Arts’ magic portal installation (which needs a proper name…)

Thanks to the BloominArt team for commissioning this work!

A brightly lit LED wall screen outside at night with a pair of silhouetted people in front. On the screen there is a colourful 3D rendition of a play park, with a slide in the background. In the foreground are two pink figures mirroring the pose of the two people. The pink figures are lit by virtual lights in the 3D scene shining from the top of a pole.

And one more showing the actual "portal" part of the installation.

We had two vans set up at two locations with a WebRTC connection between them relaying the live depth camera view. At both ends the software merges the two depth views and mixes them into the virtual 3D scene.

The local figures are in pink and the remote figures in green. Participants could interact with each other across the two sites.

As promised, here's a video from last night's first unveiling of my "magic portal" installation at the Hour House event in Skelton and Guisborough.

The participants here are being captured with a Kinect depth camera and inserted into a 3D scene with virtual lighting. Depth information is used to allow the live figures to stand behind, in-front of or even over virtual objects.

Behold! The creepy duck!

My first interactive installation developed with Flitter gets a public outing tonight as part of the Hour House project in Guisborough and Skelton, near Redcar.

Will try to post some video of it with people tonight.

Had a brainwave for how to do 3D labels in Flitter: draw text in a bunch of 2D canvases and then texture map them as emissive lighting onto partially transparent black cylinders

A set of tree-bauble-like decorations made of twisted lines of light hang on a black background in different colours. They are viewed from slightly underneath and the near ones partially obscure the far ones. Around each is a see-through black band with white writing wrapped around it. The writing consists of a set of mysterious numbers and letters arranged in columns.

Important tip: do not attempt to move studio and do an EMF at the same time!

We were at the fancy Vice-Chancellor’s Awards ceremony yesterday at Oxford University. Sensing Volcanoes, a project that Output Arts were involved in last year, was nominated for the Research Engagement award. We didn't win, but still exciting to have been nominated.

Tap on and scroll back a bit to see pictures of the piece we made for the project, The Floor Is Lava.

The Stokey tree is now lit! So pleased to be able to do this again this year with logistical support from Hackney Council’s streets team.

A tall fir tree is framed against a dark sky. The top of the tree is adorned with a giant orange red star and a string of smaller stars loops around the tree towards the ground. The edge of a house gives a hint of the scale as the tree reaches up beyond it.

More stars today, as our installation Twinkle went back up outside the arts centre next to our studio for the 4th year running.

A person in a yellow hi-vis kneels on the leaf-covered grass by a large white star while working on it. Four more stars can be seen in the background.A brightly illuminated red-orange star stands out against the dark ground. The star shines light onto scattered leaves below it. Trees are silhouetted against the dim twilight-blue sky.

So today I was mostly decorating a large (growing) fir tree in Stokey for the winter celebrations, with my Output Arts hat on. The big star at the top is one of our LED stars, the rest of the decorations are a long star festoon decorated by members of the local community.

The top of a fir tree with a bright blue sky in the background. The tree has a large white star at the top and smaller stars lower down. The edge of the bucket of a cherry picker is in frame. Two people in high viz jackets can be seen in the bucket. One clearly sports my bald head and large grey beard.

Genuinely super excited about which we are showing at Norwich Science Festival today and tomorrow with University of East Anglia Environmental Sciences

Today is going to be all about blowing up an island with a volcano!

A desk with a laptop and an external screen, random tools and electrical parts. Scattered sheets of paper show colourful simplistic maps of an island in various stages of volcanic eruption. The screens show spreadsheets and diagrams.

As I’m starting to feel xmassy, here’s a picture of a current installation in in London. The smaller stars were decorated by children from a local SEN school and other members of the community. The big star at the top is one of our giant animated LED stars.

Photo of a tall fir tree at night covered in snow. The tree is wrapped in a bright festoon of star lights. At the top is a single giant star lit up in orange and pinks.

Did a workshop with the local Girl Guides last night and got a badge! This was 20th workshop of the project, 9 left to go. If we make it through this then the badge will be richly deserved! 😂
