@pandanus Aha! It must have been the editor / publisher. Reilly was based in Chicago, where nowadays patio is "pay-show"
On page 73 of The Magic of Oz there's a footnote. It's a pronunciation guide for the word patio (because apparently Glinda now has one in her palace).
The footnote reads: *Pronounced pa'-shi-o'
Was that really how it was pronounced in 1919 Los Angeles?
Unimpressed Ev building is unimpressed. From THE MAGIC OF OZ. #ozathon24 #reading

Four stars: Tik-Tok of Oz by L. Frank Baum and John R. Neill (1914) began as a theatrical retelling of Ozma of Oz. Baum, in his enthusiasm to flood the market with all things Oz, had lost the theatrical rights to Ozma, Dorothy and a bunch of other key characters. Tik-Tok, being a rather minor character in the book, was still his. So he created a new princess, a new girl, and a newish adventure centered around the wind-up man from Ev.

p. 88: Tik-Tok is now armed and part of Ann's army.
p. 75. Ding, dong dell, who threw Tik-Tok down a well?
p. 65: And now a new POV, Polychrome. It's a veritable hoedown of characters.
p. 58. Ozga, the Rose Kingdom Princess, is a "distant cousin" of Ozma. Cousin by marriage? Ozma is part plant?
