Kort Cypriotisch (2): Pyramus
Pyramus en Thisbe. Huis van Dionysus, Pafos (Cyprus)Het verhaal van Pyramus en Thisbe is een gouwe ouwe. Zeer kort samengevat: het waren twee jonge mensen uit Babylon, die veel van elkaar hielden maar door hun families uit elkaar werden gehouden. Daarom maakten ze een afspraakje buiten de stad. Thisbe kwam als eerste aan en werd opgewacht door een leeuw. Weliswaar bracht ze zich in veiligheid, maar ze verloor een kledingstuk. Toen Pyramus aankwam, telde hij één en één op (leeuw + kledingstuk = opgevreten Thisbe) en pleegde zelfmoord, waarop Thisbe, toen ze het lijk vond, zichzelf ook maar doorstak. Al het bloed spoot op tegen de bladeren van een moerbeiboom, die sindsdien purperkleurig zijn.
De beste navertellingen zijn die van Kees Stip, die het bloedig moordverhaal onherstelbaar verbeterde in de stijl van Speenhoff, Jan Prins, Nijhoff, Gorter en – absoluut hilarisch – Vondel. De bekendste antieke versie is die van de Romeinse dichter Ovidius en doet al vele jaren gymnasiumleerlingen plezier.
Hierboven ziet u de star-cross’d lovers op een mozaïek uit Pafos. Er is alleen iets misgegaan. De opdrachtgever zei “Pyramus en Thisbe” en de mozaïeklegger pakte zijn sjablonenboek erbij. Hij begon rechts en had Pyramus al afgebeeld toen iemand hem erop wees dat dit de rivier de Pyramus was, een stroom in zuidelijk Turkije, en niet de ongelukkige minnaar. Het was te laat om het nog te verbeteren, maar de linkerhelft kreeg gelukkig nog een goede Thisbe en leeuw. Met nog een zwaard naast Pyramus was de ergste schade gerepareerd.
Overigens: het verhaal over de verkleurde plant hoorde ik hier op Cyprus ook vertellen over de Judasboom. De evangelist Matteüs meldt dat Judas Iskariot zichzelf verhing aan een boom terwijl de auteur van de Handelingen vertelt dat zijn ingewanden uit zijn buik puilden, wat in de Middeleeuwse kunst werd gecombineerd en de Cyprioten op het idee bracht het bloed te laten opspatten naar de boombladeren, die sindsdien roze rood zijn.

Notes on the Cypriot summer
Fires are part of the natural cycle in Mediterranean ecosystems. The forests burn and regenerate. The destruction we’re witnessing in the Limassol area isn’t simply “natural.” It’s the product of decades of unchecked development and a state that prioritizes profitable development over people.
Luxury villas, agrotourism projects, and second homes are expanding deep into fire-prone zones, with full state support. The wildland–urban interface becomes a zone of engineered vulnerability. Human intervention turns natural events into a social disaster.
Meanwhile, crisis response is deeply unequal. Wealthier residents evacuate with ease. Migrant workers without documents, elderly people in remote villages, animals are all left exposed. Crisis management mirrors social hierarchy.
The narrative of “sustainable development” is misleading. Agrotourism brings roads, electricity, and dense construction into forested areas. These aren’t neutral interventions, they amplify fire risk and erode ecological resilience. Even water is managed along class lines. As reservoirs run dry, developments like Souni still boast private pools. Environmental crisis becomes a tool of exclusion.
Instead of systemic prevention, blame is placed on isolated “arsonists.” Or worse, conspiracy theories. Institutional neglect disappears behind scapegoats. While the state pours millions into surveillance and police, forest protection is sidelined. Then low-wage workers are asked to donate to recovery funds. Solidarity fills the gap left by austerity.
And after the ashes settle? New developments. Fire clears the way for tourist infrastructure. Destruction is part of the planning strategy.

Ο μόνος πόλεμος εν ταξικός - ο εθνικισμός γεννά νεκροταφεία.
