The Grays out at the Shepherdstown, WV "No Kings" protest supporting the National Parks! Great turnout, very peaceful, only two maga vehicles drove by to cause crap. #Parkchat #NoKings Shoutout to the organizers. They nailed crowd control and end-of-permit time dispersal.

Woman and young girl holding signs. One reads "Fund Rangers not billionaire tax cuts" other is cut off but reads "America Isn't a Monarchy: No Kings"Two men holding rectangular signs. One reads "Stop the RIFs - Save National Parks" the other reads "Trump's Budget closes Antietam, Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal, and 367 other parks"Panorama of crowd lining small town street holding signs

Hey #parkchat, look at who we ran into! I also managed to re-complete all the national park units, after visits to the recently designated Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School (PA) & Frances Perkins (ME) National Monuments. Jen is now up 381/433. We also marked off some new Affiliated/NHA units.

That last one should have been tagged #parkchat To make up for that, here is a diff between what the agencies requested & what was ultimately hammered out by lawmakers forced to make cuts because @governorferguson.bsky.social was so anti-new-revenue. 261 ppl in WA F&W 58 ppl in WA State parks

A11: I would like to see the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area upgraded to a national park and include everything from the scenic beauty and wildlife, the trails, the movie sites, the Hollywood sign, and the Nike Missile Control Site along Mulholland Drive. #ParkChat

Q:11 Hot Spring National Park, first “set aside” by Andrew Jackson in 1832 (that’s right, 40 years before Yellowstone NP) is one of 39 current national parks promoted from lesser designations. What NPS non-park facilities do you think deserve to be upgraded? #ParkChat

Q10: Did you know there is one designation – and one location – for an International Historic Site within the NPS? Name another international location that deserves consideration for its U.S. significance worthy of NPS facility/designation. (Maybe an overseas battlefield?) #ParkChat

A9: I’ve walked portions of the Trail of Tears, Pacific Crest Trail, North Country Trail, and the Appalachian Trail. My favorite? The Natchez Trace and Lewis and Clark are neck-and-neck. #ParkChat

Q9: There are scenic trails and historic trails. The former has beauty to savor, and the latter has significance to be remembered. Are you familiar with any park service trails? Have you left footsteps on any? #ParkChat

A8: Not near me, but the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park has one of its two facilities in downtown Seattle. (The other is in Skagway, Alaska.) It’s a great way to experience the Yukon gold rush without traveling to Alaska. #ParkChat

A7: Slightly less well-known, compared to its Hoover counterpart, the Glen Canyon Dam (and its National Recreation Area above the Grand Canyon) is an impressive architectural site. I witnessed a high-water release from the dam in 2016 designed to break up sand bars farther down river. #ParkChat

Q7: National seashores, rivers, wild & scenic rivers, and recreation areas are more than fun places to splash around. They stretch from AK to FL giving us wildly different views. Do you know the nearest “wet” site to you? Have you spent time at one of these places? #ParkChat

A6: Most NPS military and historic sites are from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, which were so formative for the U.S., so it’s helpful. Rangers at Vicksburg National Military Park helped me locate the name on a plaque of one of my ancestors who survived the siege on July 4, 1863. #ParkChat

Q6: Battlefield parks, military parks, and historical parks are all separate from the 63 national parks, but a huge part of the NPS system. Does this naming confuse the significance of any of these battle sites and cemeteries, or boost their importance in the National PARK Service? #ParkChat

A5: In addition to the trailer, the informative videos at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site featured music from the film “Last of the Mohicans.” The missile silo’s self-guide tour included a phone-line to dial in and follow along. It’s still active today. Call it! #ParkChat

Q5: I once visited an NPS national historic site and the “visitor center” was a trailer in a gas station parking lot. It has since been upgraded to a beautiful facility. 14 new locations have been added in the last five years. How do smaller facilities round out the overall NPS? #ParkChat
