Say hello to `inverse-subset`! The idea is from a conversation with @andydavies at #perfnow. When you have a complete font and a subset e.g. Latin, generate another subset consisting of everything not in the original subset. E.g. all characters that are NOT Latin. npmjs.com/package/inverse-subset
Thanks so much to everyone who attended my day 1 keynote at performance.now() conference! The video will be up soon, but for now here are my slides. Topics included:
• Global web usage=
• The performance (in)equality gap
• Page bloat
• What metrics can tell us & what they can’t
• Common optimization mistakes

Last week I gave a talk at the #PerfNow conference titled “Performance Mistakes”. I started off explaining a bit about Etsy’s blameless culture, and how it’s ok to make mistakes. Then I shared 17 common #webperf mistakes using HTTP Archive data, with examples.
Slides are here - https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/performance-now-24-performance-mistakes-final-pdf/273431101
A few attendees told me they found some of these mistakes on their websites while we were still at the conference! So now they can be considered performance opportunities!
Quite a relaxing weekend after #perfnow. Only a single mail to ask for confirmation that a speaker has ordered no taxi back to the airport. That is indeed correct.
No lost shoes, stolen bags, missing aviator sunglasses, or what have you. Nothing.
Wonderful.
Leaving Amsterdam today after #perfnow It was an amazing conference – again! Thank you all for the great talks and chats in between, it was a pleasure! And a big Thank You to the organizers, the visible and invisible people who made this event possible!
I have finally rested after attending performance.now(), _the_ web performance conference. It was great to meet so many like-minded people, although I do wonder why there aren't more web performance events.
I have a long list of items to dig into.
Thanks to the organisers, speakers and attendees!
#webPerf #perfNow
Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, fellow speakers, and especially all of the attendees at #perfnow.
I can’t begin to tell you how nice it was to attend a conference again and how much I enjoyed the many conversations I had with the smart people who attended. It was exceptional. Thank you!
And it's a wrap!
The 5th edition of the #perfnow conference has come to an end, and what an incredible event it has been!
A huge THANK YOU to the organizers for putting together such an amazing experience, to the speakers for sharing their knowledge, to the sponsors who made this all possible and of course, to the attendees—you all make this event so special!
The networking, discussions, and connections created over these 2 days have been as valuable as the talks themselves.
See you in 2025!
During #perfnow we used both Mastodon and Bluesky to gather questions for the Q&A.
It turned out that most of our audience is on Bluesky, BUT that Bluesky's hashtag-follow system does not work properly. All of us who followed #perfnow saw slightly different lists of toots, and we likely missed a few questions.
I hope Bluesky improves so that it's of use during conferences, as Mastodon is and Twitter once was.
Resting after #perfnow. So far no emergencies.
I really like this one by @slightlyoff and will probably use it many many times 😎 #perfnow
performance.now() 2025 will take place on 30th and 31st of October, 2025.
