They clinked their champaign glasses. "Salute."
The festivity of the Christmas ball circled around them—the rustling frou-frou of silk, the puffing of cigars, the fragrance of roasted meats and mistletoe intermingled with the gentle tones of a piano-forte.
“The publication of your ghost story has caused quite a stir in the gentlemen’s clubs," Polidori said.
“And, I dare say in the sitting parlors as well.” Mary said. Her good cheer faltered. “But I wonder if any avid reader would find my words inadequate if they truly knew what occurred in Switzerland during our tour.”
Polidori’s face flashed white and Mary knew he was recalling the horror of the summer of 1816. He visibly shook the memories from himself and lifted his forearm.
“Shall we stroll about the room, Mrs Shelley?”
Mary placed her hand on the cuff of his frockcoat. “Always a pleasure, Doctor Polidori.”
