We've been thinking about #PaperLily / #ProjectKat by https://leef6010.itch.io recently and had a thought - there are exceedingly few #horror video games that have done anything to stick in Our mind, besides Paper Lily, all We can think of is #DDLC (#DokiDokiLiteratureClub) by @dansalvato, Iron Lung by @duskdev and #CarrionGame by @sk, and an interesting throughline emerges if you look at them together.
These are all games that treat horror not as a genre but a setting, a framing to explore something else that isn't inherently horror related:
- Iron Lung, admittedly the most horror genre adjacent on the list, lacks any sort of danger you would expect from a horror game, its story is spooky and almost eldritch with deep lore to explore and the atmosphere oppressive and dense, but gameplay wise there is no enemies to speak of, and the management elements are more tense busy work than something intended to actually get the player.
