I've been following the BeyondTrust - Treasury incident and was reminded today of this line I included in the 2025 "areas of concern" report for our Board as CIO/ISO.
Funny thing was I hesitated slightly before naming (back in November) compromises via MSP, SaaS, and Cloud-run technology products as a top concern, because I've not really been seeing it highly ranked by opinionators.
Now I'm feeling even more strongly that this was the right call.

E-bike charging infrastructure done right.

@JamesGleick These chargers are common here (Belgium), indeed. Sometimes on the pavement (👎🏻) sometimes on the parking spot itself (👍🏻).
But downside to not concentrate chargers in e-stations, is that these (‘parking’) spaces cannot be permanently/temporarily used for more social purposes, like ‘parklets’. This too is a movement that’s gaining strength in Europe.
The struggle for the public domain (here the curbside) goes on.

Als het tijdperk van de analoge fiets voorbij is, en we meer en meer elektrisch gaan rijden, dan moeten we onze stedelijke, gemeentelijke en landelijke infrastructuur daar dringend op gaan aanpassen.
Die infrastructuur gaat niet enkel om betere fietspaden, maar evenzeer om (vlotte, veilige, toegankelijke,…) laadpunten 🔌 en fietsparkeerplaatsen 🅿️.

An omnipresent and confusing example of #PublicTechnology from Flanders, Belgium.
On the left we have an acoustic traffic signal (“rateltikker”) for blind people, with the street layout in relief (two car lanes from the left, then one tram track from the left and one tram track from the right).
On the right we have our classical beg button, to request green 🚦 for pedestrians.
Too many people push the rateltikker to request green, especially when there is no beg button present.
Dat was trouwens de eerste keer in jaren dat ik nog eens iets voorgedragen heb. Geen slides, geen andere ondersteuning dan woorden op papier, sommige onderlijnd. Wat een verademing eigenlijk.
Wat een verfrissend idee van De Republiek in Brugge. Ze nodigen al enkele jaren mensen uit om een brief te schrijven aan de stad.
Op 24 november kwam ik de mijne voordragen, over de rol van technologie in de stad. ✉️

@dmoser But I do believe in techno-optimism. Technology will be part of that healthy planet, also incorporating new technologies. Let’s think (together, not just technologists) about how we can shape that.
How will we deal with climate adaptation, urban mobility, sustainable logistics, balanced energy,… also with new technologies. #PublicTechnology
A story of two on-street charging stations 🔌
We should seriously ask ourselves whether we actually want *on-street* charging stations (rather than charging stations on off-street parking lots).
But even in cases where cities opt for *on-street*, you can place them on the *parking spot itself* or on the *pavement*.
Big difference.
Tech in the street
If you look around, there’s a lot of technology in our streets. Most of it has (or had) some use. And quite a lot of that urban tech is also rather ugly.
We can and we must do better.
