#PyConZA

I'm excited to announce that I'm taking on the role of local chair for #PyConAfrica this year.

It'll be in early October or late September in my home town, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Since it is in SA, the #PyConZA team are going to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting. There has been a PyConZA conference every year since 2012 so the team is very experienced and well established. There are a lot of useful mechanisms already in place, but there is still a lot to be done.

I've just published my latest newsletter. Here is the online version: buff.ly/3pVuWbP

It covers a few conferences: #PyConNA #PyConAfrica #PyConZA; a few of my recent articles, some new offerings from #PreludeTech and an invitation to a free webinar.

Hope you find it interesting!

A long time ago, I started writing a series of articles aiming to share a how I approach teaching and education system design. Here is the latest:

This article starts to tie together a lot of the stuff I've spoken about before. It introduces an algorithm that teachers can follow in their interactions with students/learners.

I have spoken about this before in different places. Most recently as part of my keynote at #DjangoCon US and a talk I did at #PyConZA.

I'll be running a full day workshop at #PyConZA this year. The focus will be on building and testing modern web applications with #Python, #HTMX, #Playwright and #AlpineJS. Ticket sales are open and spaces are limited.

#PyConZA launched an opportunity grant program this year. The goal is open doors for people who usually would not be able to afford to attend the event. I've personally benefitted a lot from attending conferences and plugging into the #Python community in different ways, this stuff is powerful!

Want to help?

PyConZA is now accepting donations for the opportunity fund. You can support by buying an "Angel" ticket here:

Hello everybody! As you know, we have recently launched an opportunity grant program. The goal is to help people attend #PyConZA who usually would not afford to come.

We are working hard to find funding so that we can get as many people through the door as possible.

If you would like to help in some small way, you are now able to make donations through our ticketing page: quicket.co.za/events/262383-py

Every little bit helps!

Our conference would not be possible without sponsorship.

Open Source week coming to South Africa in October

The organisers of PyConZA, LinuxConfZA, and PGConfZA have announced the “first ever” Open Source week.

“This will be a monumental and historic first for South Africa, as we host a series of community-organised conferences and events for an entire week at the same venue,” said the organisers.

Open Source week will run from 8-14 October 2018, and will be hosted at the Birchwood Hotel – 10 minutes away from OR Tambo airport outside of Johannesburg.
