Concerts in the Macross universe are, naturally, out of this world! Nothing in real life comes close!

Using a combination of giant displays, holograms, robotics, and her own person, Sheryl Nome puts on one of her exciting, slightly risqué pop/rock concerts for the populace of the Macross Frontier colony ship. Even the main stage is projected at full scale in multiple locations in the amphitheater so everyone in the wrap-around audience has a great view!

Symphogear GX is dang good. As the show's third season, it balances a larger cast of six heroines against a new world-ending threat.

It features a dangerous cast of enemies, a rollercoaster of a plot filled despair and awe in equal measure, and a surprisingly hard hitting message of providing forgiveness to those very much in the wrong.

Add in the series' normal bevy of action sequences, mid combat songs, and absurdly cute moments, and the season really hold up well!

Season 3's main villain, the revenge-fueled Carol Malus Dienheim surrounded by her four Autoscorer lieutenants Leiur (in yellow), Phara (in green), Garie (in blue) and Micha (in red) formed a frightening set of enemies for our now six member team of Symphogear wielders to fight!

While fighting to save her family from a deadly betrayal, Mobile Suit test pilot Elnora Samaya watches in horror as her young daughter Ericht becomes the only person to successfully form a stable GUND-Format Permet link with a prototype Gundam.

This link allows Ericht to instinctively command the Gundam's numerous offensive and defensive systems all without suffering the painful, debilitating nerve damage that lead humanity to outlaw such direct control.

#anime #RandomAnime #WitchFromMercury

The GUND format originated as a way to use the faster than light entangled nature of Permet particles to provide the human body direct, seamless control of prosthetic limbs. The original goal was to build humans artificial bodies so as to more easily colonize further out into the solar system without fear of degenerative microgravity and deadly cosmic rays.

But, like most things, the technology became twisted and co-opted by weapon manufactures. Being able to control a Mobile Suit as seamlessly as one controls their own body would be a holy grail level of achievement. And... it worked. Sorta.

Pushing the human body so far as to try and interpret and control all the systems needed by a Mobile Suit was just too much. While the GUND-Format allowed unprecedented control and the use of numerous independently operated drone weapons, the feedback would literally burn out a pilot's nervous system.

Severe physical strain, followed by nerve damage, loss of limb function, and then the pilot's death were all hallmarks of Gundams. Yet somehow, Ericht managed a stable link and was able to operate a specially designed new generation of Gundam without suffering from any Permet effects!

To the toddler, the sensor inputs and weapons controls were just a light show or a game. Almost on accident, Ericth points to designate targets and trivially destroys the top-tier mobile suits of experienced pilots all while singing happily to herself.

Nana Diaba (read Japanese style Diaba Nana, aka Dia Banana, "Big Banana") has a great year at Seisho Music Academy, and has the most wonderful time putting on the musical stageplay "Starlight".

When her second year rolls around she is chosen by the Giraffe (the spirit embodiment of stageplay audiences) to compete in a magical winner take all competition where she could steal the her friend's talent.

Highly talented but possessing a kind soul, Banana initially refuses.

#anime #RandomAnime

The Giraffe exists on the magical, metaphysical Stage of Fate which it uses to invite stage girls to a series of Revue stage plays. Here, flooded with yellow light (Banana's color), it offers her the chance to compete. Behind a wincing Banana on its side is the Starlight Tower stage prop that Banana herself helped design.

With knowledge from the future, Diva, an artificially intelligent theme park songstress, was able to pull off the rescue of an important assemblyman and make a daring escape saving both her and her time traveling companion Matsumoto, currently occupying a stuffed bear, from armed terrorists and a collapsing building.

Finally, after much squabbling between them, they agree to formally work together to both save humanity and make sure Diva will have people to sing to.

Matsumoto and Diva shake hands on their plans to save humanity. In the background a city glows brightly. Farther back, still, is Arayashiki Tower, the still in progress data center that monitors all AIs like Diva across the world.

Karen Aijo, rambunctious as she is, is also kinda a simple girl. When she fulfills her dream of acting alongside her best friend Hikari Kagura in the musical stageplay "Starlight" she realizes that she never planned what to do afterward.

All her life, Karen worked and studied and practiced for that one short moment on stage. But it takes Hikari to really clue her in to her future among new stages and new plays.

Here, Karen starts again at Position Zero.

#anime #RevueStarlight #RandomAnime

The T mark is a center stage positioning mark known as Position Zero. It is used frequently throughout Revue Starlight to orient the musical theater actresses but also as something that signifies rank and talent. The actress whose role puts them front and center on stage, standing above Position Zero, is generally regarded as the most talented.

But the mark is also used as a starting point and one of returning back to the beginning as it is here. Karen goes through a long sequence of flashbacks and realizations that remind her that she wasn't just working towards that one moment of "Starlight", and that she actually worked hard and had fun acting along the way from a child to a young adult up on that fateful stage.

Scarlet El Vandimion defends her kingdom against an attack by thousands of misguided monsters. Here, she twirls in absolute delight as she carryout out yet another dance of death in her fancy travel/combat attire. All around her are the numerous monsters she is trashing to a bloody pulp.

I love her outfit: The white top and pants with a large white bow on her chest. Her brown open jacket extending out to her gloved hand. And her looong black boots with their gold tips rounding things out. And that red sash that flutters around her as she turns? It's almost divine!Scarlet El Vandimion and Prince Julius von Pallistan stand in a moonlit hallway at night in the royal palace. Backlit as they are in soft blue light, both their figures are simplified to colored silhouettes. And both of them look amazing!

The more rounded curves of Scarlet's floof-y red dress contrast nicely with Julius' more rectangle shape thanks to his being squared away with his back to a window with his blue cape draped around him.

I love #RevueStarlight so much!

Yes, you have to be receptive to its odd mix of acting school and magical, metaphorical, musical theater stage battles... but if you are, the #anime and the followup movie are something very special.

The cinematography on display in the movie is routinely breathtaking! Take this first fight where Nana Daiba (Banana) is trying to beat it into her fellow actresses heads that one good or bad performance or production is not an end but a beginning!

#RandomAnime

Banana's jump flip above the swords of Maya Tendo and Claudine Saijo is so well done, and... since everything is a metaphor in these battles... it demonstrates that Banana has the acting chops to stand toe to toe with two of the acting school's biggest stars!I love the awesome posing and sense of momentum as Banana charges towards her unsure friends. They are the ones who need reminding that win or lose, there's always a new stage ahead of you. Either that, or you "die" as a stage girl in musical theater. Note the arrow being fired at her by her roommate Juna. Banana dodges and even cuts multiple arrows out of the air all while engaging her friends in the battle of ideas. This wide shot where Banana moves back and forth crossing blades with everyone on their peculiar subway car turned battle arena is spectacular in motion and exquisite in stills. I believe she is again jumping above the sword slash of Maya Tendo!More brilliant framing in this stage fight as the flattened train barrels down an endless subway tunnel. What you don't see is the way the shots seamlessly go from wides to close ups and back as Banana weaves her way through her friends in total command of this battle she forced on them.

For Tsubasa Kazanari, going back on stage means more than she can express after the tragedy that proved to be the last concert of her partner Kanade Amou.

FLIGHT FEATHERS, the new song Tsubasa sings as a now solo act, is one of remembrance and miracles in tribute to Kanade's heroic sacrifice.

This concert, interspaced with Tsubasa's new rookie partner Hibiki battling nearby monsters so Tsubasa could have her moment of restoration, is one of my favorites!

In Vivy -Flourite Eye's Song-, the advancement of humanoid AI doesn't always go well for humanity or the AIs they create. The show follows the first fully independent AI, a songstress named Diva, as she uses knowledge brought to her from the future to alter multiple key events that lead to an apocalyptic AI uprising.

One such event revolves around a shy, struggling AI android singer named Ophelia whose timid, insecure nature hides a much darker tragedy.

Tuesday Simmons and Carole Stanley sneak into the stunning Mars Immigration Memorial Hall to play their first co-written song together.

"The Loneliest Girl" is a sad, slow number dominated by Carole's piano with the accompanying strums and squeak of Tuesday's guitar creating a solid, organic foundation for the two's heartfelt emotional lyrics.

The pair's longing ache for connection is what brought them together in the first place and it's what drives their debut song.

On the left, light skinned Tuesday, a teenage girl with flowing blond hair wears a white dress with long white sleeves plays her guitar. Dark skinned Carole, on the right, with her short brown hair pulled back into spikes by a band, sits behind a large white sci-fi themed piano that has large translucent panels making it see through from the top.

Behind them are the multiple levels of seating of the theater they've snuck into, and dozens of gleaming golden lights on all levels making the whole image look like a magical dream.

Kaoru Hoshino in her full musical theater stage outfit.

Although Kaoru's mother and grandmother were both popular Kouka Revue actresses, Kaoru herself struggled to get into the incredibly restrictive Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts. It took her all three of her allowed attempts.

Kaoru was one of my favorite characters in Kageki Shojo!! because of the way her story defied expectations. Many thought she was being forced into acting when that wasn't the case!

#anime #RandomAnime

With her now cut short blond hair, Kaoru wears a blue and white medieval outfit with a red belt. Her large sparkly blue cape billows out behind her as if she is suddenly and dramatically turning towards or away from the audience.

Sheryl Nome and Alto Saotome sit and talk near one of the ponds at the Saotome family home.

The push and pull between these two doesn't get enough recognition. Sheryl's strength and insecurities along with her progressing illness are matched by Alto's steadfast "with you till the end" nature and the way he is one of the few people that treats her as an actual person, often butting heads with her, rather than treating her as glamorous perfect pop idol most see her as.

After seemingly sitting on the sidelines for quite some time, Banana (real name: Nana Diaba) enters the competition atop the magical Stage of Fate to defend her ranking as a Top Star.

Where the other stage girls at Seisho Academy have their entrances accentuated by brilliant spotlights, Nana's enters with discordant music and focused laser light.

#anime #RandomAnime #RevueStarlight

Two spotlights near the rear of the circular Stage of Fate project a pair of 9's to signify the 99th performing class Nana Diaba is a part of. Fast sweeping laser lights draw interlocked circles, one set halfway on top of the other, and a cone expanding outward towards the audience. Standing inside the smaller circle at the beginning of the cone is Banana.

Earlier in the show you can find a teacher in the background using this same diagram to explain how a musical theater stage actress needs to be aware of her close-in surroundings, her larger surrounding, and her audience.

"Because even if it is taken, it's not the end! Even if I lose it, my Shine won't disappear! Every time I stand on stage, no matter how many times, I burst into flames and am Remade anew.

I AM REMADE!!"

One of the core themes of Revue Starlight is that a stage actress may lose an audition or miss out on a role, but with passion and hard work, they can try again to claim their place in the spotlight.

After Karen Aijo loses her passion for acting, she finds it again by realizing one failure is not the end. Then, in her loud, bold way, she drives home that concept to her friend Hikari Kagura who previously all but dropped out of the most prestigious acting school in the world.

We see Karen here standing in her magical military-ish stage uniform with sword and cape in front of a giant sign lit by hundreds of red, pink, and white lightbulbs. In Japanese, the sign reads something like "I AM REMADE"
