The remains of Old Rayne recumbent stone circle in Aberdeenshire for today's #StandingStoneSunday

The massive recumbent is decorated with cupmarks (decorative circular depressions, carved into the stone using tools) and has fallen along with most of the circle.

Folklore records the site being used as a judicial court of the king.

Visited April 2012, the last site on a fantastic day of stone-bothering.

A very large slab of stone lies on the ground in the foreground. This would have stood on edge as the "recumbent" stone between two upright flankers. The stone is pitted with cupmarks, a form of rock art decoration. One of the flankers is behind on the right. The stones are in a field with a slight elevation above the surrounding countryside. A small copse of woodland forms the backdrop across the fields. It's sunlit but the sly is very dark with the threat of more rain.A slender standing stone pointing upwards. The stone has a chunky base but a much narrower top half, giving it the look of a raised finger. The sky is dark and dramatic behind, the stone is in sunshine.

Off to the land of the recumbent stone circle for today's #StandingStoneSunday photo. A sunny visit to New Craig Stone Circle, 12 years back now. Time moves too quickly. The 2 flankers and recumbent stone are pretty wonderful.

If you like a RSC, the Gazetteer for the wonderful book “Great Crowns of Stone; The Recumbent Stone Circles of Scotland” is really worth a download and look through.

Today, Cothiemuir, Keig💙 Following recent tree-felling #CothiemuirStoneCircle emerges in a new light. #StandingStoneSunday #recumbentstonecircle #cothiemuir #keig #aberdeenshire #walking #localwalks

A collage of four images, taken at Cothiemuir Stone Circle, each showing the recumbent stone and two flanker stones. Recent tree-felling operations mean the stones are more open than previously. Conditions are cold and bright with some blue sky.

Some snow on these behemoths. Changes all previous senses when there in the white stuff.

Shot of a single stone of the circle that looks west with Bennachie in the background. Just one of many stone circles in the area that enjoy this view of Bennachie.Shot of the recumbent and flanker stones in the background with a flat topped stone in foreground. The sky is quite pink and purple near sunset with the snow reflecting some of that cool hue.Wider shot of circle showing 3 of the perimeter stones. Someone had created concentric circles within the circle itself in the snow. Quite nice to arrive to.
