In April 2023, three Brigham Young University students found themselves stranded in Utah's San Rafael Swell Recreation area while canyoneering. Trapped in deep water and facing the early stages of hypothermia, they desperately needed help. Thanks to Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, available on the iPhone 14, their lives were saved.
Unable to rely on mobile coverage in such a remote area, Stephen Watts, one of the students, utilized the feature to align their location with a satellite. Every 20 minutes, he sent texts to 911 in Emery County, providing their exact position. This crucial communication ultimately led to their rescue.
The Emergency SOS via Satellite feature is integrated into both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, offering users a lifeline in emergency situations where cellular coverage is unavailable. By simply holding down the power button and one of the volume buttons, users can connect to a satellite and signal for help.
